During one of our complimentary Entrepreneurship Webinar sessions, a participant shared a critical challenge he is currently facing as a new small business owner—an issue many startups unknowingly encounter.
As part of his business operations, the entrepreneur travels via commercial transport (trotro) to Accra CMB to purchase 50 pairs of slippers at a wholesale cost of GHS 25 per pair, amounting to GHS 1,250 in inventory cost. Beyond procurement, he incurs additional operational expenses including transportation, professional product photography, internet data (GHS 399), Facebook sponsored advertising (USD 280), and branded packaging materials to ensure proper product presentation and delivery.
He retails each pair at GHS 50. However, potential customers often comment publicly that the same product can be purchased for GHS 25 at Tudu, without considering the full cost structure involved in bringing the product to market.
What such comments fail to recognize is that pricing is not determined solely by the cost of goods, but by the total cost of operations, including logistics, marketing, branding, and customer acquisition. These elements are essential for business sustainability and growth
