Young people are not just participants in research. They can also help shape what the evidence means and what happens next!

In Kigali, Rwanda, the African Youth Panel (AYP) Initiative Midterm Review Sense-Making Workshop brought young people and programme stakeholders together to reflect on evaluation findings, share experiences and develop recommendations for the programme's next phase.

Facilitated by ICED, the workshop highlighted an important lesson: When young people participate in interpreting evidence, they bring valuable context that numbers alone cannot tell.

From questioning findings to shaping recommendations, their involvement demonstrated how participatory evaluation can strengthen learning, ownership and decision-making.

ICED was pleased to participate in the 5th Tanzania Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) Week 2026, held in Arusha from 22–26 September.

Representing ICED, Sarah Ameso and Clarice PanyiN Nyan, PhD contributed to conversations on strengthening Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning systems, leadership, and the use of evidence to support better decision-making.

Reflecting on the week, Sarah shared:

“We often ask, ‘What evidence do we need?’ But an equally important question is, ‘What evidence already exists that we have not yet found, connected or used?’”

This question sits at the heart of Evidence and Gap Maps (EGMs), which help systematically organise and visually present existing research and evaluation evidence.

Today we held great conversations with Prof. Amos Njuguna the Chairperson of the Network of Impact Evaluation Researchers in Africa (NIERA), and Faculty Member at USIU-Africa together with his team from NIERA.
We talked about how working together can shift the needle on evidence in Africa, and how much we can learn from networks like NIERA that are bringing African researchers together to make evidence a game changer.

A great conversation at the University of Nairobi today!

Dr David Sarfo Ameyaw, and the ICED team paid a courtesy call on Mr Orindi, Director of Corporate Affairs, to talk about how both institutions can partner towards promoting research for evidence, collaborative learning and capacity strengthening in evaluation and development.

High on the agenda was the Evidence to Action Conference 2027, which comes home to Nairobi, Kenya next year after a successful edition in Ghana. We're excited about what this partnership could mean for evaluators, researchers and decision-makers across Africa.

We're kicking off the new week with another blog from the Evidence and Gap Map on Retail Finance Distribution by ICED and ISSER UG's initiative—the Retail Financial Distribution Research Initiative (ReFinD).

In this thought piece, ICED's research team explores what makes agent banking networks sustainable and why recruiting more agents is not enough for dependable financial services. Across evidence from seven countries, the blog highlights the importance of factors that determine whether agents can remain viable and provide dependable financial services.
