Development in modern times is not just about physical structures and economic growth but processes that bring about desirable changes in the lives of the people. There is therefore the need for adequate research into the various problems confronting our cities and community space. The effectiveness of any development process depends largely on the availability of accurate data through effective research development.
This however brings to bear the important of data collection, collation, validation and analysis. This has become one of the reason why the developed countries still progress physically and economically in the terms of development whiles those in the third world countries still continues to struggle.
The purpose of research as simply examined by Collis & Hussey (2003) is to investigate existing situations or problems, Provide solutions to problems as well as to construct or create new procedures or systems.
Research is very necessary in an attempt to solve developmental challenges confronting our cities and towns. It has been define as the process of enquiry and investigation; it is systematic, methodical and ethical; it can help solve practical problems and as well increase knowledge.
One problem that often plagues progress in global development especially the developing countries is the slow translation of research into practice. Oftentimes, a disconnect exists between those who create the evidence base and those who are positioned to implement the research findings.
The appropriate use of research saves lives, reduces poverty and improves the quality of life for people living in developing countries. But, for this to happen, research needs to be made as accessible as possible – both to the decision-makers themselves and to the people and organizations that seek to influence them."
