It's a beautiful Monday morning, but let's throw back to two Saturdays ago at the Career Conversations with Godson Iyk event.

The brought Vera Sablah of to the stage, and she left us speechless.

She spoke straight from the heart, and the rawness of her journey was nothing short of inspiring! Here are some takeaways from her session.

On Employability Skills:
It's not just about the technical skills! Can you communicate effectively? Show up on time? Be a team player? Soft skills are critical in the real world and almost not taught in school you have to learn them yourself.

On Personal Branding:
Your brand is who you are, what you do, and who people think you are when you're not in the room. Everything including your speech, your actions, your wardrobe—reflects the company you represent. And here’s the interesting part: your social media presence matters! Employers are looking at your posts, your comments, and even who you follow. Keep it relevant.

On Securing the Job, Vera gave us the blueprint

Understand market trends

Sharpen your soft skills

Have a need-to-learn mindset

It hit hard when she told the audience to master cross-cultural communication, forget chasing money and focus on hard work as hardwork won't kill you. 😃

On Preparing for Interviews:
Nail your CV. Research the company. Dress like you mean it—NO slippers or Lacoste! Sell yourself, but don’t lie. Ask questions—engage the panel. You’re more than just your résumé; you’re a brand. Own it.

Vera was all. She poured her hearts and and she really spoke Unfiltered like a boss,

As a leader, one of the best ways to start your Monday is in an excited state. This is because, your emotions are contagious and can easily rub of your team. Also, your emotions are major drivers of productivity.⁣

Why walk into the premises looking all moody and angry on a monday morning that it's almost become a norm?⁣

Interestingly, micromoments in your daily organizational life as these make up the emotional culture of your team. ⁣

This week, as a leader, it is very important to be in tune with your emotional pulse. ⁣

When you're in tune with your emotions, you'll notice 3 major things: ⁣

✅️ You'll become MORE AWARE: Paying attention to what you do and how it affects others around you becomes more easier. ⁣

✅️You'll become MORE INTENTIONAL: You'd see yourself doing what you mean. It becomes easier to keep to promises and satisfy customers. ⁣

✅️You'll become MORE PURPOSEFUL: Now, you do things for a reason, for a bigger goal. Whether it is attending to customers, writing a proposal or balancing an account, you'll do all these with purpose.⁣

It's a beautiful new week. To make the best of this week, ensure you're paying attention to your emotional pulse and that of your team. Ensure your team also has the right emotional culture. ⁣

Encourage little acts of kindness and support and you're on your way to building an emotional culture characterized by caring and compassion.⁣

Have a beautiful week ahead! ⁣
Rooting For you! ⁣

I shared on one of my favourite topics: "BUILDING EFFECTIVE PEOPLE FOR BUSINESS GROWTH".⁣

Here are some points we discussed: ⁣

✅ Always ensure from the get-go that there's a clear picture of the kind of team you need to succeed. This is important even before your first hire. It should never be an after thought. ⁣

✅ Create a Clear Map for your people by answering these questions: Where is the business going? How will it get there? What will be required to get there?⁣

✅ It is not enough to hire amazing talent. You must be ready to create room for autonomy. Sometimes, show them what you intend to achieve and leave the way. ⁣

✅ Encourage communication, creativity and collaboration ⁣

✅ Invest in their growth. It's more cost effective having a well trained team. Stop thinking of "what If they leave?" ⁣

✅ Don't limit your people to a commuting radius. Talent is mobile now. ⁣

✅ Show that you care. When people know that you genuinely care about them, they go above and beyond on the job. They are easily engaged at this point. ⁣

Remember, as a leader, you're in the business of building people that will build your business. ⁣

As a young entrepreneur one of the major lessons I've learnt from my mentor's lifestyle is this: “If you treat your business casually, you will become a casualty of your business.”

This doesn't just apply to business alone. I've found this lesson applicable to every area of my life including health, relationships, family, finance etc and I'm gladly reaping the benefits.

You see, I've learnt that:

If you treat your health causally, you will become a casualty.

If you treat your personal and professional growth casually, you will become a casualty.

If you treat your relationships casually, you will become a casualty.

If you also treat parenting casually, then your kids will become a casualty.

There's only one key to growth, high performance and real impact. It is COMMITMENT.

True commitment unlocks doors of great gains.

So today, I ask you my friend:

What are you committed to doing in this new month?

Are you constantly being pulled away by every form of distraction?

Have you disciplined yourself enough to choose consistency?

You see, it's time to rise to that level of devotion where you are driven by purpose. Where you don’t treat things casually, that level where you are FULLY committed.

If indeed you must leave a legacy, you must stay committed to your path.

DON'T BE CASUAL.

Happy New Month. May is already exciting! 🕺🏿🕺🏿🕺🏿

Having a not so planned conversation with a friend yesterday and somehow we delved into sharing random lessons we've learnt from Q1 of 2022. Here are some we shared: ⁣

✅ To improve the quality of answers you're getting from life, improve the quality of questions you're asking. ⁣

✅ Less is more. ⁣

✅ Be kind: A little gesture of kindness here and there can change someone's life forever. Contrary to what many believe, kindness doesn't cost an arms worth. ⁣

✅ Guard your heart with all diligence but do not end up building brick walls around it. Make friends, count on people but don’t lose yourself in doing so. Loving your own self is way more important than anything else.⁣

✅ Have a mind of your own: Do not be tossed to and fro by every single doctrine of opportunity, investment, trend etc that comes your way. Also, do not sacrifice your values for trends. ⁣

✅ Though we are living the same life, everyone's journey is different. Find your path. ⁣

✅ Sometimes the race is not necessarily won by the swift. It's won by those who are able to hold on and persevere till the end. ⁣

✅ Opportunities abound even in unseemly places. The only question it keeps asking is "are you ready?"⁣

As we prepare for Q2, change the quality of questions you're asking and you just may find that answer you've been seeking all these while. ⁣

I am rooting for you! ⁣

Cheers!! ⁣

Sometime ago, an acquaintance I've barely heard from in ages called me up via FB and the question he kept asking was: "Godson, how did you evolve? What was the magic? Baba, show me the way!"⁣

Those questions took me back memory lane. Lol. Well, as much as there's no shortcut to growth, below are somethings I shared with him. I'm sure one or two tips will be helpful to you too. ⁣

=============⁣

In your career path, give yourself the opportunity to grow. ⁣

Have faith in your abilities.⁣

Don't be shy. Don't be scared. Don't be timid. Don't swallow your voice. ⁣

I know, sometimes you hold yourself back because you don't want to appear like the "know it all guy or girl" especially when it feels like you may make a mistake and your colleagues will make you a laughing stock. ⁣

But here's the question: how long will you keep letting people's opinions about you determine your growth pace? ⁣

======
Dear young person, if you must shatter glass ceilings, set new records, break new boundaries and do exploits, you must GIVE YOURSELF THE OPPORTUNITY TO GROW! ⁣

Be bold enough to ask questions and seek clarity where you don't understand. ⁣

Be bold enough to test new waters. ⁣

Contribute your idea no matter how insignificant you think it maybe. ⁣

Volunteer to take up new tasks. ⁣

Keep upskilling⁣.

When you make mistakes, admit you did. Learn the lessons, get better and move on.

Learn to seek help when stuck.

Dont wait to be told. Take initiative where necessary. ⁣

Remain visible. ⁣

In the long run, these tips will help make your career growth journey seamless, but you must first GIVE YOURSELF THE OPPORTUNITY TO GROW!

I get it. Many people shy away from communicating via email. I remember when I got into the corporate space in 2013/14, one of my biggest fear was writing emails. However; I took trainings and pointers from how my senior colleagues sent mails and that helped me so much.

Truth is, sending and receiving email is a very important aspect of in the workplace. If you already work in an office, you essentially write emails literally every day: to colleagues, to your boss, to clients.⁣

If you're a job-seeker, you'll need to send emails to apply for job vacancies, send CVs or communicate with hiring managers. ⁣

Here are simple tips that you need to know to help you write better emails: ⁣

1: Always use an appropriate subject line: the subject line states the intent of your mail. Most times, it determines if the receiver will open your email or not. Do well to keep it short and straightforward. ⁣

2: Use proper salutations: while you can easily get away with not using a salutation when writing to your friend, it is important that you start your email by addressing the end reader properly. ⁣

E.g Dear sir/ma(for someone you don't know), Hello sir/ma(if you have an existing relationship). ⁣

3: Go straight to the point: an email is not a thesis. Keep it short and concise. State the problem, possible solutions or actions taken and questions if any. ⁣

4: Use appropriate punctuations: start a new sentence with the capital letter. Avoid shortening words in a formal letter. Capitalize all abbreviations. Use fullstops and commas where neccessary. ⁣

5: Sign off properly: use yours faithfully when applying for jobs or sending to an unknown person. If it's an internal mail, feel free to use sincerely yours. ⁣

6: Proofread your mails before sending: too much typographical errors puts you forward as a tacky person who doesn't pay attention to details. You don't want to come off that way. So, make sure you read again before hitting the send button.

I hope this helps. Feel free to share this with someone who needs it.

I'm a go-getter. I'm most happy when I set goals and crush them. ⁣

Recently I was having a conversation with a younger colleague and he wanted to know how he could crush some of his goals before the end of the year just like me. ⁣

It was an interesting conversation and I was super glad to share. Below are some of the tips I shared with him: ⁣

1: Don't just set goals, create systems:-⁣

Systems are simple structures that help govern the way you go about your day to day activities. It could be in the workplace, during your job search or your business. Systems help to break your goals down into tiny bits. It helps to take your eyes off the big picture and keep you focused on the little steps you need to take daily to achieve your goals. It is more easier to take actions once the big picture has been broken down to smaller chunks. ⁣

2: Be accountable:-⁣

When you put systems in place, it is very important that you have someone who can always help put you in check. This helps you to know how well you're performing or not, towards your goal. You should also note that no one can hold you accountable unless you have agreed and are totally committed to make it happen. This person maybe a colleague, partner, mentor, friend etc. If you must crush those goals, you should get an accountability partner. ⁣
⁣⁣

3: Imbibe the culture of Discipline:-⁣

In my experience, I’ve realized that regardless of the level of a goal, a common missing link to progress is lack of discipline. Be diligent to keep at a task, be disciplined enough to prioritize your goals and be committed to following one course at a time till it succeeds even when you don't feel like.⁣
⁣⁣⁣

Do you have some tips that can help my colleague crush his goals before the end of the year? Please share with me in the comment session. ⁣

May the odds always be in your favour. ⁣

Every star professional was once a rookie, Don't be afraid to start. Don't be afraid to make mistakes.⁣

Your present job may not be your dream job, however keep carrying out your duties with excellence. Do not despise the days of little beginnings. ⁣

Your career and personal development is your sole responsibility, you cannot outsource it. ⁣

No matter how skillful you've become on the job, always remain teachable. Remember, there's always something new to learn. ⁣

Do not be afraid to take feedbacks. One of the fastest routes to growing on the job is seeking feedback. ⁣

May the odds always be in your favour. ⁣
