India to increase duties on cashews; Processors claim for a minimum import price

The Indian government is set to raise the import tariff for cashew kernels from 45% to 70%, discouraging processing investments in African countries, according to information released in its 2019-20 budget.

Meanwhile, the government is maintaining the 2.5% import duty on raw cashew nuts (RCN). The domestic RCN crop cannot meet the Indian processing demand, African supply being key for the industry. The Cashew Export Promotion Council of India (CEPCI) proposed increasing the minimum import duty on cashew whole from INR400 (USD5.82) per kilo to INR720/kg and to withdraw the import tariff on RCN.

Indian cashew exports reached 22,300 tonnes worth USD189.9 mln between January and April 2019, 121 tonnes less and down 16.1% in value year-on-year, according to customs data. Meanwhile, the Indian industry bought 117,960 tonnes, 23.1% less.
