WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU STOP TALKING FOR A YEAR?

In India, there is a meditave practice called “Vipasana” where participants go without speaking even a single word for days.

I've attended one such session and stayed absolutely silent for 5 days. Here's what I experienced:

You have to remind yourself constantly for the first day to simply keep your mouth shut physically. This looks and feels very awkward but you soon get over it.

Since I was at a meditation center, I had no access to my phone, the internet or television. The organizers encourage you to think about your life, all of it! Recall every memory. Despite how many years you've lived, most participants could recall their entire lives in a day - that's how fleeting a single human life is.

You sleep a lot as a way of passing the time. But this doesn't work for more than a few days because once you're well rested, you just can't force yourself to sleep.

You become more attuned to sound. When not constantly listening to people speak, you begin to notice sounds in nature, tactile sounds of things like cutlery and even the sound of your own breathing.

You get much better at reading and speaking through body language. Eye contact, facial expressions, shrugs, hand gestures. You start to tune them to convey messages and in time, you can almost “hear” a person's body language from a distance.

But perhaps the most surprising outcome is when you're given the freedom to speak again, you almost don't want to. You realize you have nothing that needs to be said urgently.

When you do speak again, your ears don't fully recognize your own voice. It's a feeling similar to hearing an audio playback of your voice - you question if this is what you sound like to everyone else and it feels a bit odd.

WHAT'S THE BEST BRAIN HACK YOU KNOW?

If you’ve found yourself putting off important tasks over and over again and you can’t control it, you’re not alone. In fact, it isn’t a bad thing for most people to procrastinate to a certain degree – but procrastination has affected some people chronically and destroy their relationship, career, and life.

Many factors cause us to procrastinate. However, I’m only going talk about one of the many. This article may only take you 2 minutes to read. So here come the first test for you: stop procrastinating and start reading.

The Lizard Brain

One of the biggest factors behind procrastination is the way our mind is wired to crave for instant gratifications and perfections. We want fast, good results and pleasures without putting in the work. This then translates itself into our work and life:

We can’t start writing because it takes a long time to complete an article.
Training for strength is a long journey that most people ended up never stepping into the gym.
You procrastinate on cleaning your room because you perceive it is going to take up a long time.
Most people are trying to fight this behavior with external motivations, cruel punishments, and sheer willpower. The problem is, this part of our brain (which is what I like to call the lizard brain) is evolved from the beginning of the first land species–the reptile.

The lizard brain had kept animals (and us) safe for around 300 million years, while the newly developed human brain only has its history of 200,000 years. Trying to enforce willpower and self-disciple to our lizard brain is like a baby fighting an MMA champion.

How the 2-minute Hack Works

The 2-minute hack works like this:

When you find yourself procrastinate, forget about the task you need to get done. Then, think about the first 2 minutes of that task. For example:

To write an article, the first 2 minutes is to write a paragraph.
To hit the gym, the first 2 minutes is to put on your sports shoes.
To read a book, the first 2 minutes is to read half of the page.
After you figure out the first 2 minutes of the task you’re procrastinating on, do it. The rule is simple, if you don’t feel like to continue doing it after 2 minutes, you’re free to stop without guilt.

In most cases, you will finish the things you’ve been procrastinating for long after the first 2 minutes.

Why it Works

Activation energy is a term widely used in Chemistry, describing the minimum quantity energy that a reacting subject must possess to undergo a specified reaction. This same term is applicable in our daily productivity.

The 2-minute hack isn’t any magic.

To get ourselves to start doing something, we need energy that is bigger than the task. However, many healthy habits we like practice are challenging to start because their required activation energy is high and hence the resistance is high.

The 2-minute hack lowers the resistance because now, instead of thinking about the big to-do you need to get done, you’re focusing only on the first 2 minutes of it. When you complete the first two minutes, the momentum will carry you forward to finish the entire task.

Why Small Action Wins

I have to admit that I lied. This article isn’t a 2-minute read. But if you’re reading this now, you just experience how effective the 2-minute hack is.

There is no way for us to win the fight with our lizard brain. So instead of fighting it to force yourself doing something, work around the corners.

When you think of the great things you want to achieve, acknowledge that they don’t happen by themselves, and they certainly don’t happen overnight. The best to get where you want to be isn’t visualizing your way to it, the only way to get there is by taking action.

And you don’t need significant action either, all you need is just a small tiny action that put you a step forward, 2 minutes at a time.

WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF I DID 10 PUSHUPS A DAY?

You’ll gain muscle, get stronger, and look awesome in the mirror.

Let me explain. Doing 10 push ups every day may seem like nothing at first, but for a person who hasn’t worked out their entire life - it’s a big deal. I know because I couldn’t do 2 proper push ups when I was starting out.

Most people know what they need to do to get in shape - Eat right. Workout. Drink tons of water. Sleep. Repeat.

But most of them don’t do it. Why? They don’t see the result right away, so they give up.

When you start doing 10 push ups a day, you won’t lose much weight, you won’t feel any stronger, and to behonest, you will even think that it’s kind of a stupid idea.

But here’s what staying committed to doing 10 push ups a day WILL do - it will help you build self-discipline.

As you continue to push your self-doubt aside and do 10 push ups a day, you start to feel that 10 push ups are too easy. So you decide to do 11 push ups. Then the next day you do 12, then 13, then 14, 15, 20, 30, 40, 50, 100, and boom! You have turned yourself into a push-up machine.

Also, another interesting thing usually happens on the side - Mr. Momentum kicks in.

Now, you don’t want to do just push ups, you want to test your limits. So you start researching about various bodybuilding workout programs. You start learning about nutrition and experimenting with different diets. You fall in love with proteins and start looking for gyms nearby. You find other people who are interested in getting stronger and healthier. So you guys meet up and go for a run. And the snowball starts to get bigger and bigger.

6 months later, you notice something different in the mirror - your chest is bigger, your arms look pumped, and you feel like you are full of energy all the time.

How did it happen?

It started with doing 10 push ups a day.

Give everyone on earth one chicken.

75% of the people decide that chicken would taste great. So they roast their chickens, have one excellent meal, then are hungry again tomorrow.

24% of the people realize their chicken is an egg factory, so they enjoy one egg every day for a few years until the chicken dies.

1% of the people figure out that if they mate their chicken with a rooster they can raise a whole bunch of chickens. In a few years they will have more fresh eggs and chickens than they could eat.

So as a one time reset you haven't changed a thing. Everything is exactly as it was.

HOW DO I MAKE 100K PER YEAR?

Let me introduce you my friend Dan (a fantasy name, but the person is real and is my friend).

Dan is now 32 years old. Two years ago Dan made 15000€ per year after taxes.

Last year he surpassed the 260000 euros mark.

How did he do that?

By selling lettuce.

One day, after work, Dan went to the local store to buy lettuce, tomatoes, onions and other vegetables. Since he worked 12 hours a day, when he went to the store, the best looking vegetables weren’t there.

He thought “what if I didn’t have to come to the store and I could buy vegetables online from a reliable source…”

An Aha moment for Dan.

He began sharing is idea with his friends and most of them said that it wasn’t a good idea. When he talked with me I said: Dan, just go to the countryside, ask the farmers if they want to sell their surplus to you, then, you can resell those things to other people and deliver vegetables, eggs and other things to their door.

Dan was discouraged but tried anyway. Many farmers were absolutely enthusiastic about the idea.

They could sell their surplus and make good money from it and Dan could add its margin and the delivery costs.

He started the thing a Saturday morning.

He took his car, he filled its trunk with vegetables and eggs, and he delivered 400€ of goods to the doors of his first buyers.

Today he owns 5 trucks who are delivering vegetables, eggs and other locally produced food to 10 cities. In doing that he encouraged local farmers to produce more quality vegetables, they earn more than before and people who are buying from Dan knows that his goods are bought locally and are fresh.

That’s why they buy from him.

That’s how he started making his 100k per year.

So, here’s the small guide:

1. Watch around you for an unsatisfied need.

2. Confirm the need by asking people but don’t get discouraged if they don’t seem to understand your idea.

3, Start as soon as you can with what you already have. You don’t need anything particular to start.

An intelligent person utilizes his mental capacity to solve problems.

A clever person uses resources around him to solve problems.

A wise man picks the right problem according to his personal situation.

You can have a combination of these qualities.

WHAT IS THE MOST CLEVER LIFE HACK YOU'VE LEARNED?

There’s a cartoon I watched as a kid where the hero gets thrown in jail high up in a tower. There’s an old man there who has been in the jail all his life. The hero demands to be let out and the gate opens. The hero walks out. The old man looks at the open door and then turns to the audience and mutters: “You mean all I had to do was ask?”

I laughed at this when I was a kid but reflecting on my life, I’ve had countless moments where I was that old man. A crush of three years who I never talked to, questions in meetings that I never voiced and promotions that I never pushed for.

Over the last five years, I’ve experimented with doing what the hero in the tower did and ask for what I want. And in many cases, just like in the cartoon, the door really opened. This is from little things like requesting no olives in my salad to larger demands like having 20% time at work to pursue self directed initiatives.

As long as you’re sincere and reasonably competent, you will be amazed how far simply asking for things will take you.

Exercising Your Mind (“AKA Thinking”)

Take 30 minutes at the end of every day to find somewhere quiet and think. You are probably thinking that this suggestion sounds somewhat silly- after all, don’t we all think all the time?

But focused thinking without distraction is wildly different from the kind of thinking you do all day long.

Just try it tonight- pick a topic to think about. The options are endless! Should you think about your relationships? What will your career look like 5 years from now? How are your kids doing or will you have kids someday? Who are your best friends and have you lost touch with some of them? For that matter- what does a friend mean to you?

There aren’t many better hobbies to make you smarter than thinking. Think of it as exercising your mind.

How do I tell if somebody is intelligent?
HOW DO I TELL IF SOMEBODY IS INTELLIGENT?

They ask you questions.

When you answer, they ask you more.

When you start using big words, they ask for clarification.

When they can’t understand anything you’re saying, they ask for you to explain it to them as if they were a five-year-old.

When you say something intriguing, they write it down in their notebook or phone.

These people are not naturally more intelligent. They’re better learners which makes them more intelligent.

Why do they learn better?

They’re genuinely curious and ask questions from a humble standpoint. I’ve met billionaires who’ve said, “explain it to me as if I were a five-year-old.”

This simple phrase has changed my life when it comes to learning.

It comes back to the famous Chinese proverb:

“He who asks a question is a fool for five minutes; he who does not ask a question remains a fool forever”

As soon as you stop asking questions, you stop learning.
As soon as you stop writing down ideas, you forget them.
The hardest part of becoming intelligent is not bullsh*tting yourself about what you know; it’s being humble enough to ask questions. If you can do this, then people will see you as intelligent, too.
