A Grade 6 pupil in Mombasa was rescued by police after her mother allegedly prevented her from sitting the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA) because her examination registration number was 666, which the mother reportedly believed was linked to satanic symbolism. According to local media reports, school officials became concerned when the candidate failed to report for her assessment and alerted authorities. A multi-agency team later visited the family's home, where officers reportedly found the girl locked inside a room. She was rescued and escorted to her examination centre, where she was allowed extra time to complete the assessment. The mother was subsequently arrested and remains in custody while investigations are ongoing. Examination numbers are assigned by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) and are not chosen by schools or parents. The incident comes as thousands of learners across the country sit the KPSEA, which assesses pupils completing Grade Six under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) before they proceed to junior school.

Two Ghanaian twin brothers have pleaded guilty in the United States for their roles in an online romance fraud scheme that cost victims more than $9 million, according to the US Department of Justice. Jamal and Kamal Abubakari, both 22, admitted conspiring to commit wire fraud, a crime involving the use of electronic communications to deceive people and obtain money. A third defendant, 53-year-old Amanda Joy Opoku-Boachie, also pleaded guilty, US authorities said. According to prosecutors, the group used fake identities on dating websites and social media to build relationships with victims, most of them older Americans. They then used false stories to persuade them to send money. Victims included people in the US, Germany and Austria. Some of the money was sent to accomplices in Ghana and elsewhere, prosecutors said. Each defendant faces up to 20 years in prison. The brothers are scheduled to be sentenced on February 9, 2027, and Opoku-Boachie the following day.
