and motifs into contemporary designs. The Basket: Basket was first invented as a tool by our ancestors to sieve Pito
beverages but as time goes on the Pito basket has gone through a lot of
modifications and new technology now known as Pusiga Straw Basket
Weavers
About 120,000 of the total population in Pusiga district are craft
Women/Men. Most of these craftsmen/Women who are beneficiaries of a trade
passed on from their fore bearers; work on part – time basis. Because most of
them are Farmers, they give maximum attention to craft production in the dry
season. There is
however hundreds full time craftsmen – about 60% being organized Women
groups of which Nyariga – Doone Mothers Club is one. Workers in the Crafts
industry are scattered all over the district in their homes and under trees. Raw Material:
The tall vertiver grass used in the production of baskets is obtained in Southern
Ghana whiles the short grasses/straws used for Hats and hand fans among others
can be obtained in Northern Ghana. The major source of Material is therefore imported from Southern Ghana. Uses of Pusiga Baskets
Baskets are generally used for various functions and occasions apart from its
expressing of the traditional and cultural values of the people. Baskets are use for shopping, gifts, fruit baskets, laundry baskets. Jewelry safety, artificial flower base and many, many more. They are
environmentally friendly. Production Levels
Quantity of production per month cannot be imperially quantified because
production depends on the order a group of weavers receive. However an
individual weave, given full time to weaving can weave about 5-10 baskets
depending on the types and shape of baskets. Prices:
Prices of baskets vary from Market to Market and the type of basket one needs. Prices of baskets are not unique but negotiable. Raw materials are also seasonal
and that also determines the prices. Terms of payments
