Yesterday, members of our team participated in the Company Secretaries’ Summit themed “Governance as Value Creation”, organized by Mindful Governance. The summit brought together company secretaries, governance professionals, and industry experts to explore emerging trends and critical issues shaping the governance landscape in Ghana.
One of the key discussions focused on the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in governance and regulatory compliance. A major takeaway was that AI is not positioned to replace company secretaries; rather, company secretaries who embrace and effectively leverage AI will create greater value and distinguish themselves in the profession.
The session explored concepts such as shadow AI, human-in-the-loop, black box models, automation, augmentation, and Generative AI tools such as GPT. These discussions highlighted both the opportunities and risks associated with AI adoption, reinforcing the need for appropriate governance frameworks, policies, ethical guidelines, and safeguards to ensure responsible use of the technology.
Another insightful session examined the dynamics of the boardroom and the importance of self-awareness for company secretaries. Understanding one’s own personality, communication style, and approach, as well as those of board members, can significantly enhance collaboration, influence, and effectiveness in supporting the board and management.
There was also a thought-provoking discussion on the “Governance Leader’s Mindset Continuum”, which challenged company secretaries to move beyond the traditional perception of their role as administrators and record keepers. Instead, the modern company secretary must evolve into a trusted governance adviser: one who proactively adds value, builds strong relationships, and becomes a strategic partner whom clients and boards consult before key decisions are made.
The conversations reinforced the importance of continuous learning, adaptability, and innovation in strengthening the company secretarial profession and advancing good corporate governance in Ghana.
