_The_controversy_
Why will Ghana attribute founders' day to only the "big six"?
Is it the case with the formation of the first political party in the Gold Coast, or are there other key figures who played significant roles in the country's independence movement? It is important to recognize and celebrate all individuals who contributed to Ghana's independence, not just a select few.
_The_Reality_
The struggle for independence in Ghana's history goes beyond the formation of the first political party in Ghana, i.e., the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC). Broadly, it encompasses the various alliances and youth groups formed against colonial rule, as well as the sacrifices made by countless individuals in the fight for freedom and self-determination. The Aborigines Rights Protection Society (ARPS), led by John Mensah Sarbah, and the Gold Coast Youth Conference (GCYC), led by Casely Hayford, also created awareness and laid the groundwork for Ghana's independence struggle. Recognizing and honoring the contributions of these lesser-known groups and individuals is essential in telling a more comprehensive and accurate history of Ghana's journey to independence.
