BUSINESS NEWS | GHANA AND BEYOND 🌍 AUGUST 28, 2026

🚩Ghana was ranked 4th in terms of cocoa bean exports to Europe between 2021 and 2024, averaging 53.7%, Fitch Solutions has revealed. Cameroon was the biggest exporter of cocoa beans to EU with 74.7%, followed by Nigeria, 57.8% and Côte d’Ivoire, 57.4%. The UK-based firm said while domestic processing offers one avenue for capturing greater value, it expects sustainability and traceability requirements to become increasingly important in shaping export flows, particularly for exports destined for the EU.

🚩Ghana’s building cost inflation increased to 4.0% in July 2026, up from 3.1% in June, driven mainly by rising prices of construction materials and sharp increases in plant and equipment costs. Data from the Ghana Statistical Service’s (GSS) July 2026 Prime Building Cost Index (PBCI) showed that overall building costs were 4.0% higher than a year earlier and rose by 0.3% between June and July 2026. The index increased to 138.3 in July 2026, from 133.0 in July 2025. Despite the July increase, building cost inflation remains significantly lower than the 14.2% recorded in July 2025, reflecting a sharp moderation in construction cost pressures over the past year.

🚩Ghana’s public debt declined sharply from 70.3% of GDP in 2024 to 49% at the end of 2025, marking significant progress in efforts to restore debt sustainability, the World Bank has said. World Bank Division Director for Ghana, Liberia and Sierra Leone, Robert R. Taliercio, said the reduction was among the key gains recorded under Ghana’s ongoing economic reform programme. He was speaking in Accra at the launch of the World Bank’s Tenth Ghana Economic Update. Mr Taliercio said the improvement in Ghana’s debt position, together with gains in the fiscal and external sectors, reflected the impact of difficult economic decisions taken to stabilise the economy.

🚩Ghana will gain additional fiscal space equivalent to 1.00% of gross domestic product from 2027 after the International Monetary Fund agreed to a lower primary surplus target, marking an important shift in the country’s adjustment programme from aggressive fiscal repair towards a more balanced approach to debt sustainability and development spending. The primary surplus target on a commitment basis will decline to 0.50% of GDP from 1.50%, creating room for the government to direct more resources towards infrastructure, social programmes and other development priorities while maintaining the broader fiscal framework underpinning Ghana’s economic recovery.

🚩Gold Fields’ decision to more than double its interim dividend after generating billions of dollars in cash from record-high gold prices is placing renewed focus on Ghana’s efforts to secure a greater share of the mineral wealth being created from operations such as the Tarkwa mine. The Johannesburg-listed miner declared an interim dividend of 1,625 South African cents per share, up 132.14% from 700 cents a year earlier, after attributable profit climbed to US$1.85 billion in the six months to June 2026 from US$1.03 billion in the comparable period.

BUSINESS NEWS | GHANA AND BEYOND 🌍 AUGUST 26, 2026

🚩The Government of Ghana is pursuing the procurement of 1,200 megawatts of combined-cycle thermal power capacity, with the project expected to be completed by 2029, Minister for Energy and Green Transition John Abdulai Jinapor has disclosed. According to Mr Jinapor, the initiative forms part of efforts to secure a reliable electricity supply while reducing the cost of power generation for the country. Speaking at the *Future of Energy Conference*, he said the government had taken an ambitious decision to procure the additional thermal capacity using the country’s own resources.

🚩Ghana is preparing to shorten the maximum tenure of large-scale mining leases as part of a sweeping overhaul of its minerals legislation, in a policy shift aimed at giving the state greater leverage over finite natural resources while creating more room for domestic participation in one of the country’s most important industries. Cabinet has approved a comprehensive review of the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006, Act 703, with the proposed reforms expected to reshape how mineral rights are granted, renewed and supervised. Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, said the reforms were intended to modernise a regulatory framework that government believes no longer fully reflects Ghana’s ambitions to capture greater value from its mineral endowment.

🚩Ghana’s economic recovery is entering a more fragile phase in which the greatest danger may no longer be the crisis conditions that pushed the country into debt distress, but the temptation to relax reforms as headline indicators improve, according to the International Monetary Fund. Dr Adrian Alter, the IMF’s Resident Representative in Ghana, has warned that policy complacency now ranks among the most important risks to the country’s outlook, even as private-sector credit growth and improving macroeconomic conditions provide early signs that recovery is beginning to reach businesses.
