🚩 Societe Generale Group has agreed to sell its entire 60.22 per cent interest in Societe Generale Ghana, bringing an end to more than two decades of French control of the locally listed bank and opening the door to one of Morocco’s largest financial groups. Under the agreement, Attijariwafa Bank will acquire 55.22 per cent of Societe Generale Ghana, while the Social Security and National Insurance Trust will purchase an additional 5 per cent. The transaction will give Attijariwafa a controlling interest in the Ghanaian bank, subject to regulatory and other required approvals in Ghana and Morocco. The value of the transaction was not disclosed. Attijariwafa is expected to take over all the activities of Societe Generale Ghana, including its customer portfolios and employees, according to a statement released through the Ghana Stock Exchange on Thursday.

🚩Ghana’s trade surplus shrank by about 70.0% from US$4.3 billion in the first quarter of 2026 to US$1.3 billion in the second quarter of 2026. This was captured by the quarterly trade statistics report by the Ghana Statistical Services. According to the GSS, exports barely increased as it went down by 1.6%, while imports jumped by 47.5%. Therefore, the smaller surplus came almost entirely from buying more. This put the total exports value of the country at GH₵108.5 billion (US$9.6 billion) and imports at GH₵94.7 billion (US$8.3 billion), bringing the total trade at US$17.9 billion. The GSS explained that Ghana's headline surplus in quarter 2, 2026, was due to strong prices for a few commodities, above all gold, sold to a small group of buyers, measured by quantity.

🚩Star Oil Ghana Limited has announced its decision to rejoin the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC), while calling for reforms to the Chamber’s governance structure to ensure fairer representation of its members. In a letter dated October 1, 2026, and addressed to the Chief Executive Officer of COMAC, the company said its membership would resume after it suspended its participation in January 2026 over concerns about the Chamber and its representation of members’ interests. The letter, signed by Star Oil CEO Philip Tieku, said consultations with oil marketing companies and other industry stakeholders, as well as appeals from fellow COMAC members, had prompted the company to reconsider its position.

🚩Ratings agency, S&P Global, is forecasting that Ghana's fiscal deficit will widen to 3.9%, a year through 2029. “Our previous forecast was 2.7% a year. We revised our forecast because of revenue shortfalls in 2026 linked to the temporary removal of the fuel levy, the clearance of legacy arrears to suppliers and contractors, and higher capital spending”, it disclosed in its country ratings report on Ghana. Ghana's budget for 2026 aims to raise capital spending by 150%. But S&P said the government spending has been heavily curtailed since the end of 2024, particularly for capital projects.

🚩Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson says the government has reduced the cost of borrowing by more than half since President John Dramani Mahama took office. According to him, the cost of capital, which previously averaged about 30%, has fallen to between 9% and 13%. The Finance Minister disclosed this during a meeting with the Food and Beverages Association of Ghana. “Since President Mahama took office, we have deliberately brought down the cost of capital. Today, businesses can borrow at between 9% and 13%,” Dr Forson said. He stressed, however, that the government’s ultimate goal is to bring borrowing costs down to single digits so businesses can access affordable financing, expand and create jobs. The Finance Minister also expressed concern about the limited availability of credit to the private sector.

🚩President John Mahama has renewed Ghana's pledge to stop exporting raw mineral ore by 2030, telling mining companies to begin processing locally as new rules requiring more of the country's gold to be refined at home take hold. "I have said that by 2030 we're not going to export any raw ores, mineral ores, out of Ghana," Mahama told an audience at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York on Friday. "So those who are mining today must be mindful that they begin to put in at least primary and secondary processing of the ores," he said. Besides gold, Ghana mines bauxite, manganese and diamonds, and is preparing to become a lithium producer.

🚩President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans for Ghana to build a 1,200-megawatt (MW) state-owned gas-fired thermal power plant, which would become the country's largest single power facility if completed as planned. The President said the government intends to sign an agreement for the project before the end of 2026. He made the announcement during a town hall meeting with the Ghanaian community in New York on Friday, September 25. At 1,200MW, the proposed facility would have a higher installed capacity than the 1,020MW Akosombo Hydroelectric Power Station, currently Ghana's largest single generating facility by installed capacity.

🚩Standard and Poor's (S&P) Global has affirmed Ghana’s credit ratings at “B-/B” on the country’s Long- and Short-Term Foreign currency as well as the Local currency. The ratings agency also reviewed the country’s credit outlook to stable. “We also affirmed our 'B-' transfer and convertibility assessment on Ghana”, it added. According to the US-based firm, the credit rating of 'B-/B' means an issuer or obligation is in the non-investment grade (speculative or "junk") category, indicating high credit risk, high vulnerability to default, and that bad economic times will likely impair the ability to pay back debts.

🚩The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has shut down Nyak-City Hostels Limited for offering investment products to the public without the required licence. The company, which was incorporated in 2025 by the Registrar of Companies, is an unlicensed asset-backed investment company. Nyak-City Hostels Limited operates an investment product known as “Treasury Hostel Investment”, which it claims offers “a better alternative to a treasury bond” and promises investors guaranteed lifetime returns from investments in hostels over a period of 60 years. Speaking to the media during the shutdown of the facility, Deputy Director General of the SEC, Mensah Thompson, said the Commission remains committed to sanitising the investment sector and protecting the renewed confidence in Ghana’s financial industry.
