FORUM ON CLIMATE CHANGE IN SABOBA HELD

According to the District League Table, Saboba is among the poorest and least developed districts in Ghana. The majority of the people in the district are farmers who rely on rains in the annual rainy season to plant their crops. There is very little mechanization of farming in the Saboba district and a high reliance on traditional methods of weather forecasting to plant crops. In the wake of increasing climate change which manifests in the changing patterns of rainfall and reduction in soil fertility, the farmers in the district are often affected.

For many, it has become increasingly difficult to predict the pattern of rainfall, hence they live it to chance when they plant crops. In recent times, many farmers have reported huge losses caused by stalled rainfall (draught), or very high downpours (flooding), and high cost of inputs. Most of these farmers attribute the climatic changes to the ‘will of nature’ as a result of their lack of knowledge and understanding about the science of climate change.

As such, climate change still remains a myth among many people in the Saboba district. With this forum, we wish to explore the following questions:
1. How do inhabitants understand “climate change” and related concepts?
2. What are the views, perceptions and concerns regarding climate change?
3. How can stakeholders reach a consensus on climate change mitigation and adaptation?
