“Mummy, my ears are buzzing!”
It’s my 6 year old daughter. She walks into our room in the middle of the night…my exhausted body is not deep in sleep, so I heard her right away, got up and walked up to her. She continued “There is something in my ear”
Me: Do you think an insect has entered your ear?
Daughter: Yes!
All my life, I have never seen an insect enter someone’s ear. I was once told it’s not possible, but as a Teacher, Sunday School Teacher and Mother, I do not dismiss anything a child tells me.
I looked at her, not too sure what to do. Tried to look into her ear, nothing! I thought of slapping her gently, I decided against that.
I thought of using an earbud, I thought, no, what if whatever is there goes deeper.
So I held her close, hugged her, prayed for her and said I think it’s a cold. You should be fine in the morning. (When they have cold, they have pains in the ears too, so I assumed that was it).
Just when she was calm and walking out, she said “I hear it again!”. Then she put her hand in her ear, and a tiny insect walked out! For real!
I was filled with all sorts of thoughts and emotions. So I hugged her again with gratitude in my heart to God and also glad that I did not dismiss her claims.
This incident also reminded me of when my son was 2 years. He suddenly had this smell around him. I asked his dad, my family, his Teacher, somehow I was the only person who smelt it. I noticed it came from the head area. So I kept inspecting him all over anytime I smelt it, until one day (3 weeks later), I saw something in his nose. I called his dad, he saw it too, we tried to touch it and realised it was hard, so he used pincers… and what did we see? A tiny piece of paper folded and placed in his nose! Oh the mixed emotions I felt that day!
All this to say, as a parent, if your child tells you anything, don’t dismiss it. Even if you don’t believe it, take time to monitor it. And if you feel something is off with your child, don’t dismiss it.
Parenting is hard! Motherhood is hard, but in the midst of all our busy schedules, accomplishments, struggles, responsibilities, let’s not forget that being a parent requires our full attention. Sometimes it’s overwhelming, but I remind myself that they didn’t ask to be born, we brought them here, so we have to make them our priority.
How would you have handled this buzzing in ear situation? Is there anything else I could have done to get it out?
