The AusIMM Tarkwa Student Chapter had an insightful field trip to the Ghana Manganese Company (GMC), bridging classroom learning with real mining operations.
โ Discovered in 1940, with mining operations beginning in 1960.
โ Mining is carried out across Pit A, B and C, using line and block mining methods, guided by a 30 m ร 60 m drilling pattern that adapts to changing geological conditions.
โ Surveyors play a key role in setting out drill locations, while geologists sample at ~3 m intervals to inform ore characterization.
โ Strict safety protocols govern blasting operations, with machinery cleared to ~300 m and personnel to ~500 m, followed by thorough post-blast inspections before operations resume.
The visit highlighted the strong interconnection between surveying, geology, drilling and blasting โ reinforcing how Geomatic Engineering skills directly support mining efficiency and safety.
We thank GMC for hosting our members and look forward to more industry engagements. ๐โ๏ธ
