Remembering Oustass Omar Bun Jeng
Many would attest to the fact that Oustass Omar Bun Jeng (real name Omar Fadera), being a local Islamic preacher of The Gambia in the 80s to mid-90’s, has immensely contributed towards the propagation of Islam in Senegambia.
He died on Friday, 16th September, 1995 in Gunjur village of Kombo South District of The Gambia and millions of people in Senegal and The Gambia mourned his death. The demise of the legend is no doubt a great loss to Senegambia. He married four wives and was blessed with 12 sons and 4 daughters.
His way of preaching with the powerful melodious voice he had has given many the reason to follow him. He has inspired and motivated many towards Islam and that made him earn a lot of respect in The Gambia and beyond. He was a simple and down to earth man who used to preach with respect and righteousness. His sermons at Radio Gambia increased his popularity and gave him recognition in the sub-region.
Bun Jeng settled in Gunjur after he was posted there as teacher. He owned a school there likewise in Brikama. Bun was admired for both his preaching and his skill in melodious recitations of the Holy Qur’an. He used to preach and lecture in several languages, as he was blessed to be fluent in Wollof, Mandingka and Arabic. The Kiang born scholar, who was raised in Senegal, was a product of the Riyadh University in Saudi Arabia.
Gone for two decades now, many people still prefer listening to Bun Jeng’s past recorded sermons, lectures and Qur’anic recitations in The Gambia. Virtually his voice is heard on all the radio stations in the country especially during Ramadan.
May Allah grant him a place in jannatul firdaus.Aameen
