HOW TO MAKE YOUR CHICKENS GROW BIG ENOUGH FOR CHRISTMAS SALES

Every poultry farmer knows that Buyers want BIG chickens for Christmas.

If you are rearing chickens for this xmas, you should be working towards getting them ready by 20th December when sales begin to peak.

But then, how big should your chicken be to attract customers?

What size does the Christmas Chicken buyer actually want?

Let me attempt answers to these.

The Christmas buyer wants big chicken.

But then, the Nigerian poultry market does not have a uniform standard for dividing chicken into big and small sizes. There are customers who consider 3.5kg chicken as big while there are others who consider any chicken less than 5kg as small.

The size of chicken considered as “BIG” therefore depends on your type of customers.

Now, most buyers of live chicken are sensory based buyers. They gauge size by what their eyes see and what their hands feel. They do not usually rely on any weighing scale for measurement.

It is therefore important that your birds are both big to the eyes and heavy to the hands. Big birds that do not have weight will not sell.

From my personal experience, I categorize Xmas buyers into regular and premium customers.

The regular customer buys chicken weighing between 3kg to 4.5kg. With the right care, these Broilers should be between 6 weeks to 10 weeks of age.

The premium customer however buys Broilers weighing above 5kg and aged 12 weeks above.

Now, if you have chickens on ground, you should by their age, already know the type of customers you are targeting. Is it regular or premium?

No matter your target customers, it is important your birds add weight quickly so that you can meet up with the Xmas deadline.

I will briefly itemize a few things you should do to achieve the desired weight gain quickly.

1. Buy and use only high quality feeds.
This is not the time to economize on feed cost. We are battling against time and against growth. Low quality feed take a longer time to give result. Since we don’t have all the time, I advice you use the highest quality feed you can find.

2. Feed your birds ad libitum.
By this I mean you should stop measuring feed for your Broilers. Give them as much as they can eat. The more they eat, the more weight they gain.

3. Don’t waste your nights.
Give your birds light in the night so that they can eat for a few more hours everyday. At the minimum, your birds should have constant light at night for the first 4 weeks of their life.

4. Give vitamins in their water.
Vitamins are necessary to complement the feed and increase appetite. Make sure they have it in their water as required.

5. Keep their pen clean.
Dirty environment reduces appetite and supports the spread of diseases. You do not want your birds falling sick at this critical time.

6. Give all necessary vaccines and medication.

7. As the birds begin to grow, sort them into different groups according to size. The big birds should be separated from the smaller ones so that each has access to food and water without bullying.

I do hope these tips help you meet up with sales this Xmas.

HOW TO CALCULATE THE BAGS OF FEED YOU WILL NEED TO RAISE 100 BROILERS YOU WANT TO SELL DURING CHRISTMAS TIME.

The question of how much feed per broiler chicken is a very interesting one that farmers should often ask.
And it is pretty wise to ask this question. To know how much feed per broiler chicken, is to know what it takes and the capital needed to raise the number of birds you have in mind.
This requires a sort of broiler chicken feed calculation. As a rule or guide,
a broiler will eat about twice the target weight in Kg you want them to have
Usually, it is a little over 2X the total body weight you want them to have before you sell them off.
That is, if you desire your birds to have a 2 kg body weight within 5 weeks, you should be ready to use a little over 4kg of feed per bird within their 1st week to their 4th week.

For example, you have 100 broilers, and you want them to achieve 4Kg in 9 weeks, using
the 2x principle, you will need 2 x 4kg (of feed) per bird within that 9 weeks.

That is; 2 x 4Kg =8Kg which means you have to feed each of your birds a total of 8kg of feed within 9 weeks.

The total feed required for the 100 broilers will be
8kg feed per bird × the number of birds (100) =800Kg

Remember that a bag
Of feed is 25Kg.

Therefore; the total number of which is 800Kg divided by 25kg=32 bags of feeds.

This also means you will need 32bags of feed to raise 100 birds from week 1-week 9 to make them weigh atleast 4kg per bird in 9 weeks.

You can add 1 bag since most feed companies' measurements do not
read 25Kg after weighing them.
I hope the example gives you more understanding?

Broiler Production Tips
Price of day-old chicks
=₦500- #550
Price of broiler starter= #9,000 (New Hope).
Broiler farming is all about the number of chickens you can raise and sell, therefore, the more the number of birds you can raise and sell, the higher the profit.

Your selling price varies depending on your target market and location.

A very important thing to consider is to have a cold room or partner with one and sell directly to consumers. Because middlemen e.g. market women can frustrate you
if you are not careful, and never sell your birds on credit. You didn’t raise them on credit, so don’t sell on credit unless you sign an MOU with the buyer

The bottom line is, broiler raising is very lucrative if you have buyers and sell at a good price. It is also a business of numbers, and the number of batches you can do in a year determines.

Just imagine that you have a deal of supplying 1000 or 2000 birds every 7 weeks constantly, trust me, within a year, you would have added a couple of zeros to your bank account

WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO BEFORE STARTING CHICKEN FARMING BUSINESS?

This one of the common questions people do ask me on my day to day farm visits and at the entrepreneurship seminars that am invited to talk to the youth.

Unemployment is rampant in all African States, but ironically, 99 out of 100 youths will leave their homes with huge tracts of land to seek jobs in towns where they receive petty salaries, pay rent, buy food, pay bills and remain with nothing to save. There are some who are still in towns struggling during these hard times when they have land at home that they can do agribusiness from.

There's a difference between jobs and business. The youths should be rushing to embrace the later and forego the former. I will tell you what you need to do to start chicken farming business, or any business opportunity that you have in mind.

You need to know that being successful in business involves learning from those who have already succeeded in the same field. You learn by observing, or asking questions and guidance. The one you learn from is your mentor. You need to be careful with who you call your mentor because some of them are out there to mislead you and make you give up so that they remain in the field alone and enjoy monopoly. The following are 5 simple things to do before starting a business;

a). Believe in yourself
Have a strong belief in yourself that you can succeed for this will help you rush to find long lasting solutions to obstacles that you may encounter, rather than finding excuses and giving up. Self belief is the engine of self transformation.

b). Change the circle of friends
Shed off characters who will never celebrate your success, those who only laugh with you when you have money, those who want to spend most of their time partying and doing funny things that won't make you shift to greater levels. Get friends who will help you realize your potential and reach the level you want to.

c). Do research
Research on the kind of business you want to start. In chicken for example, research on breeds, demand, competition, the amount of capital you will need.

d). Face your fears
Don't allow fear to hold you back. A good entrepreneur is a risk taker. With self trust, hardwork and determination, you will succeed.

e). Join training classes
This will help you avoid mistakes that will make you get loses. Don't start blindly waiting to "learn from my own mistakes." That's a poor mentality. Learn from other people's mistakes!

Let's look at how to reduce mortality in poultry birds during the raining season and cold weather

A lot of farmers complaint about the high rate of mortality and the none conversion of feed to flesh by the birds.

Litter material

It can be rice husk or wood shavings

The commonly used litter material is wood shavings

The litter material should be of good quality, fresh and disinfected before being spread on the floor

Bad liter material will lead to mortality

The immune system of the birds are very weak during cold weather

The liter material should be of good quality to reduce disease outbreak

Let's look at the depth of the liter material

The depth of the litter material should be 4binches tall to serve as a comfort zone for the birds

If the liter is not well covering the floor, the birds will come up with cold and it will lead to CRD which will affect their respiratory system and mortality if not combat immediately

The litter material should be protected from rain

The place of storage should be rain proof

Frequency of replacement

The rate in which the litter material Is changes will depend on the farmer's management but the surest way is through the ammonia

If the litter material smell in a way that it gives an unbearable chocking smell

This is the time to change the litter material

Another factor to look out for in this rainy season is diseases

Diseases thrive in the cold season

Diseases like

Fowl pox

Cholera

Aspergillosis

CRD

Newcastle

Salmonela

This diseases thrive in rainy season

Farmers should look out and prevent them

Ways to prevent mortality in the rainy season

Control mosquitoes by getting rid of stagnant water and cementing the floor of the poultry house

Get a bulb to serve as a source of heat for the birds and bring the room temperature to 28•c

Housing the house should be a roof with asbestos so as not to encourage cold to the birds

During rain the curtain should be brought down to prevent rain from coming into the poultry house

Nutrition: the birds will require more energy feed during the cold season
You can add sunflower cake

You can get it from those making feed

You will add to their feed

The house should also give protection from cold

You can make their drinking water lukewarm during the cold season so as to prevent them from taking cold water.

Six (6) Leadership Principles that we can learn from an Eagles

1. Eagles fly Alone and at High Altitudes.
They don't fly with sparrows, ravens, and other small birds.

MEANING; Stay away from narrow-minded people, those that bring you down. Eagle flies with Eagles. Keep good company.

2. Eagles have an Accurate Vision. They have the ability to focus on something as far as 5km away. No matter the obstacles, the eagle will not move his focus from the prey until he grabs it.

MEANING; Have a vision and remain focused no matter what the obstacles and you will succeed.

3. Eagles do not Eat Dead things. They Feed only on Fresh Prey.

MEANING; Do not rely on your past success, keep looking for new frontiers to conquer. Leave your past where it belongs, in the past.

4. Eagles Love the Storm.
When clouds gather, the eagle gets excited, the eagle uses the storms wind to lift itself higher. Once it finds the wind of the storm, the eagle uses the raging storm to lift itself above the clouds. This gives the eagle an opportunity to glide and rest its wings. In the meantime, all the other birds hide in the branches and leaves of the tree.

MEANING; Face your challenges head on knowing that these will make you emerge stronger and better than you were. We can use the storms of life to rise to greater heights. Achievers are not afraid to rise to greater heights. Achievers are not afraid of challenges, rather they relish them and use them profitably.

5. Eagles Prepare for Training;
They remove the feathers and soft grass in the nest so that the young ones get uncomfortable in preparation for flying and eventually flies/ when it becomes unbearable to stay in the nest./

MEANING; Leave your Comfort Zone, there is No Growth there.

6. When the Eagle Grows Old,
His feathers becomes weak and cannot take him as fast and as high as it should. This makes him weak and could make him die. So he retires to a place far away in the mountains. While there, he plucks out the weak feathers on his body and breaks its beaks and claws against the rocks until he is completely bare; a very bloody and painful process. Then he stays in this hiding place until he has grown new feathers, new beaks and claws and then he comes out flying higher than before.

MEANING; We occasionally need to shed off old habit no matter how difficult, things that burden us or add no value to our lives should be let go of.

ARE YOUR BIRDS HAVING WATERY EYES WITH SLIGHT CATARRH?

What is affecting them is most likely infectious Coryza.

This is the season and most people are experiencing it.

Let's look at the disease, why it occurs and how you can treat it.

Infectious coryza is a bacterial disease of chickens.

Chickens contact this disease when they come in direct contact with the discharge from the nose of other infected birds. Airborne droplets can also spread the infection.

Once the disease is introduced into a farm, more and more birds get infected as the affected birds contaminate the drinking water with the discharge from their nostrils.

When a chicken picks up the disease, it will begin to manifest the signs anywhere between 1 to 3 days.

At first you will notice they are dull, their activity decreases and feed consumption reduces very slightly.

As the disease progresses, you will observe that they begin to sneeze especially in the cool period of the day. This will be followed by very obvious discharge from their nostrils and finally the face and head begins to swell.

As the swelling increases, it may prevent the eyes from fully opening. This will affect the chicken’s ability to eat and drink. At this stage, you will have to help them locate food and water if you want them to eat and survive.

Affected birds will usually have a mild form of diarrhea. They will lose weight greatly too. Young pullets will have a delay in start of egg production while already laying hens will have a serious drop in egg production.

For the head swelling, it usually clears off in 10–14 days; however, if secondary infection occurs it can persist for months.

The disease can affect birds of any age but it is usually observed in birds that are above 3 weeks of age. This means you have to be on the watch out as your birds clock 3 weeks.

For infected birds, early antibiotic treatment may help them recover. I should emphasize that early treatment is important.

As soon as you seen the first signs, go ahead and administer medication via drinking water.

Drugs containing Colistin and Erythromycin such Colimycine are usually effective.

Oxytetracycline works too.

Various sulfonamide mixtures including EST Mix works well.

In very severe outbreaks however, although treatment may result in improvement, the disease may recur when medication is discontinued.

Prevention is therefore still the best option.

Once you sell out a batch that was infected, ensure to disinfect all facilities and materials used by the infected batch before bringing in a new batch.

HOW FARMERS SHOULD ESCAPE THESE STRUGGLES

Just like any other successful business lies real hard work struggles and losses that have been experienced over the years.

Sadly enough hardly a day goes by without hearing a fellow farmer, particularly a poultry farmer is about to stop or has given up poultry farming, for some strong unbearable reasons.

This knowledge base article is going to elaborate on some of these very important struggles farmers, particularly poultry farmers go through and how to identify and overcome these struggles in order to make gains:

1. GETTING MARKET FOR YOUR BROILER BIRDS

Poultry farming is a very lucrative and attractive business if done properly, that is why a lot of people venture into it in droves.

Hardly every day passes by without newcomers joining the poultry sector, unfortunately, most of these people don’t have a laid down plan to market their products.

So they fall into trouble along the line some years back a friend of mine who visited our farm and was fascinated by what he saw and he decided to go into farming too.

Which was good and fine one thing he forgot to do was to make extensive research, particularly about how he would market his product at the end of the day.

He bought the chickens, and he was able to manage and reared them properly to maturity, but he had one major problem selling them.

No festivity in sight and he couldn’t reach people that could buy them irrespective of festivity or not.

And he has to keep on feeding them for as long as he is still looking for buyers. As a result, he became discouraged and almost quit but we have to encourage him and told him what today next time.

Poultry farming especially broiler farming is a business you start from the end, meaning you have to secure your market before you start producing them.

2. DEATH AND DISEASES ARE A SERIOUS PROBLEM TO POULTRY FARMERS

Death and disease are common among poultry farmers especially newbies i.e. newcomers into the sector.

This is a result of proper or inadequate education and knowledge about poultry farming. A lot of farmers lack the nitty-gritty of poultry farming from brooding to maturity.

They rear the chicken the way they understand it, rather than seeking knowledge from experienced farmers, and also following the proper way of raising birds.

For instance, some months ago a neighbor told me of how he bought some sets of day-old turkeys and he immediately allows them to roam about without proper care i.e brooding process, that shouldn’t be.

Day-old birds are supposed to be under certain regulated temperatures to stay alive anything less than that, might lead to their death. i.e. very low temperature below 300C. Unfortunately, he lost all the birds to very low temperatures and diseases.

In other words, he incurs a high mortality rate and financial losses which can be avoided.

A lot of poultry farmers go through this trauma and lose silently and some even gave up farming altogether before you even realize what is happening.

There is a need for proper education, training, and retraining of poultry farmers particularly new farmers so that these losses can be reduced to the barest minimum.

3.LACK OF FUNDS A MAJOR FINANCIAL CRISIS FOR POULTRY FARMERS

Lack of funds not just in the farming sector in all spears of life or business if you lack funds definitely you would struggle to survive in business.

Poultry farming is not an exception, so many poultry farmers would go into farming without adequate or proper planning.

For instance, if you are stocking say 200 birds normally 200 hundred birds should consume between 25kg to 28kg of feeds per day as they approach table size or point of lay in terms of layers.

Unfortunately most farmers are not prepared for this they just stock in birds without adequate provision for their feed and then along the line they starts struggling with feeding.

This might lead to hunger stress subsequently death, and serious losses of birds. Because they would be under fed or their feed may lack adequate nutrition needed to keep them alive or grow properly.

So it is very important before you stock in any particular number of birds you should calculate adequately the quantity of feed that would be enough to feed them to maturity or point of lay in terms of laying hens, by so doing you don’t have to struggle or suffer in silence.

4.SECURITY AND THEFT

when a thief sees eggs or offlayers, they see ready money

Adequate security of farms can never be over-emphasized. There are different ways in which you can protect your farm from intruders or prevent thieves from gaining access into your farms. i.e

By hiring the services of security personnel.

Providing proper and adequate fencing round the farm.

Have certain species of guard dogs protect your birds, CCVT cameras, emotional sensors and sound alarm in case of any intruder trying to gain access to the farm.

Sensitizing and educating your farm workers on the need to be proactive in fishing out or recognizing suspecting customers.

Proper stock and record-keeping too would help in checking and reducing wastes and theft to some extent on your farm.

Location of farms also matters for instance in certain areas of our countries such as (------------)name it....where you have serious security challenges of banditry, poultry theft, petty thieves, cattle rustling, etc.

The location of your farm matters a lot, you cannot just go and established your farm in areas that are prone to theft.

It is very risky they can just appear one day with machetes and go away with all your animal which is very terrible and sad.

It is therefore very important when establishing your farm, look for an area that is well secured and not too far away from human settlement, especially in regions that are prone to serious security challenges.

This is to avoid loses and damages to your property. When establishing your farm, please don’t rush take your time to look for a well-secured location, with a good road network to bring out your goods not too far from the market or processing area.

So that you don’t have to struggle and go through unnecessary hardship a lot of poultry farmers go through.

How can you stop chickens from pecking each other?

There are many reasons why chickens peck each other. The reasons range from their being too hot, too crowded, too short of feeder or waterer space, stagnant air and trying to establish the leader of the flock. To stop them you must first solve the problems listed above. Usually the issue lies in the fact that they are over crowded and/or lacking appropiate space for feeding or watering. If that doesn’t work try adding grass, hay, or lettuce in the pen. Sometimes darkening the hen house will work. If all else fails, you can try some products on the market like “Poly Peepers” (they are like flexible blinders) or antipick lotions or sprays. We do not recommend debeaking, it is cruel because it essentially cripples your bird’s ability to take in proper nutrition. If one of your birds are pecked until bleeding occurs, remove it from the pen. The others will begin pecking at it and eating the flesh
