A neutral wire provides a return path for electrical current, completing the circuit back to the power source. It is connected to earth (ground) at the main electrical panel and is normally close to 0 volts relative to earth, while carrying current during normal operation. The color of the neutral wire differs by country and wiring standard. For example, older British-standard installations use black for the neutral conductor, while the IEC standard uses blue.
