KAPPA CONSULTING SA is proud to celebrate the commissioning of the “Thessaloniki Metro Extension to Kalamaria”. A flagship infrastructure project and a significant milestone in the continued development of Thessaloniki’s urban transport network.
As a Lead Designer, KAPPA CONSULTING SA has been involved in the project since the tendering phase, contributing throughout the development of the General and Detailed Designs for key elements of the metro extension to Kalamaria, including the two single-track TBM tunnels (7km), Mikra Station complex, forestation and other major design elements.
Heartfelt congratulations to all those involved in the project, from Elliniko Metro and the Greek State to every engineer, designer, specialist and member of the project whose dedication and expertise made this milestone possible. Cut & Cover – Lane Cover structures are considered an optimum restoration solution, particularly where road alignments pass through areas of deep excavations.

These structures are constructed by excavating the required area, implementing temporary support measures where necessary, constructing the permanent structure, and subsequently backfilling above and alongside it in accordance with the design.

The following aspects should be considered during the design and dimensioning of these structures:

1. Compliance with the Required Environmental Conditions

Environmental requirements significantly affect the geometry of the structure, structural thicknesses, and the height of the backfill above it, such as maintaining a free excavation height above the final backfill level of less than 25m.

2. Maintenance of Traffic During Construction

Maintaining traffic on the existing roadway is an important design consideration. The construction sequence should therefore be incorporated into the detailed design, including concrete construction joints, reinforcement continuity and lap lengths, available working space, and successive traffic diversion stages.

3. Type of Foundation – Shallow or Deep Foundation (Piles)

The foundation system is selected based on the geotechnical conditions of the area. Where one side of the structure is adjacent to an excavation slope and the opposite side borders steep downhill terrain, a deep foundation system using piles should be investigated.

Special attention is also required in critical local areas not fully covered by the structural model. These areas may require additional reinforcement to resist bursting forces, as illustrated in the following images.

Building a state-of-the-art waste treatment facility on 80 m of uncompacted mine waste?

Here is how geotechnical engineering overcame extreme soil uncertainty.

The Mechanical and Biological Treatment (MBT) Plant in Ptolemaida was built on a site consisting of waste deposits from open-cast lignite mining activities. Beneath the surface lay 60–80 meters of heterogeneous, randomly deposited fill—a chaotic mix of marls, clays, sands, and gravels.

To address severe risks of differential and long-term creep settlement, an integrated ground improvement strategy was implemented, combining surcharge preloading with deep prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs).

A comprehensive geotechnical monitoring program was implemented throughout the preloading process. High-precision settlement markers and vibrating-wire piezometers provided continuous data on ground movement and pore-water pressure development. The monitoring data was then back-analyzed to calibrate numerical geotechnical models, verify design assumptions, and assess the overall effectiveness of the ground improvement works.

The result? A resilient, structurally sound foundation built efficiently on highly problematic ground.

Some of the most demanding engineering projects are defined not only by what is built, but also by the precision required to protect everything around them.

Santacruz Station, part of Mumbai Metro Line 3 in India, is a compelling example.
The project combines a deep cut-and-cover station box with a parallel wide NATM platform tunnel, constructed through a carefully coordinated sequence of TBM and NATM works within a highly constrained urban environment.

As lead designer for the geotechnical works, Omikron Kappa developed the temporary retaining structures and tunnel solutions required to control excavation-induced movements, manage groundwater and safeguard critical surrounding infrastructure, including the Vakola Flyover and a 2,400 mm water main.

Now fully operational, Santacruz Station demonstrates how advanced analysis, multidisciplinary coordination and risk-based design can transform complex underground constraints into safe, resilient and functional infrastructure for the city.
