An excerpt from the HUMINT 101 Training Manual—part of the professional curriculum offered by the
Intelligence and Security Academy.

HUMINT, or Human Intelligence, is the organized and institutionally controlled collection, evaluation, and use of intelligence derived from human sources and human interaction.

Not every conversation, rumor, or personal opinion constitutes HUMINT. Intelligence value depends on the source’s actual access, how the source obtained the information, its timeliness, and the possibility of corroboration.

The intelligence officer must distinguish what a source directly observed from what the source heard, believes, or infers. A human statement should not be transformed into a confirmed fact without evaluation.

The principal strength of Human Intelligence is its potential to provide insight into human intentions, relationships, motivations, and decision-making processes. Its fundamental limitation is that human beings can make mistakes, be influenced, or intentionally deceive.

Within NATO and Western intelligence services, HUMINT is an institutional function requiring trained and authorized personnel, approved methodology, source protection, common standards, and accountability.

A new intelligence officer should avoid both unquestioning trust and automatic suspicion. The professional responsibility of the officer is to listen, evaluate, record, and present information accurately and honestly, including its limitations.

Courses. Books. Training material. Knowledge. Experience.

Όλα κάτω από μία Academy.

Yesterday, John Kiriakou and I had dinner and the opportunity to discuss, among other things, our plans and vision for the Intelligence and Security Academy. (www.intelligence-security-academy.com)

We are both extremely excited about what we are building and strongly believe that the Academy has the potential to become something truly unique in the field of intelligence and security education.

I am especially proud to have John Kiriakou as one of the key members of our faculty. His experience, knowledge, and perspective bring significant value to the Academy and to the students who will have the opportunity to learn from him.

And this is only the beginning.

Very soon, we will be announcing the rest of our faculty and introducing the professionals who will help shape the future of the Intelligence and Security Academy.

Stay tuned.
