The work of Panayiotis Tetsis (1925–2016) holds a defining place in post-war Greek art. Born on Hydra and educated at the Athens School of Fine Arts before continuing his studies in Paris, Tetsis developed a deeply personal figurative language shaped by observation, light, colour, and the physical presence of the Greek landscape.
A painter, printmaker, teacher, and academician, he remained committed to the visible world throughout his career, transforming landscapes, interiors, everyday scenes, and still lifes through expressive gesture and a powerful sense of composition. His work was presented internationally and honoured with major retrospectives at the National Gallery of Greece, establishing him as one of the most influential figures of modern Greek painting.
Panayiotis Tetsis, Sifnos, Top View, Indian ink on paper | 100 × 70 cm.
In Sifnos, Top View, the island landscape is reduced to an intense monochromatic structure. Sweeping passages of ink, architectural fragments, and rhythmic lines transform the familiar Cycladic topography into a composition driven by movement, contrast, and perspective.
The work has been documented in publications dedicated to Tetsis’ oeuvre and is also included in the ISET digital archive.
