The Stelida Naxos Archaeological Project (SNAP) is a geo-archaeological survey and excavation of a chert (a type of stone) source and early prehistoric stone tool workshops, thought to date back as far as 260,000 years ago. We wanted to take the chance to feature several of our senior staff members. First up:

Tristan Carter has directed the Stelida Naxos Archaeological Project since 2013 and is the only team member to have worked here annually since the start (Covid years included!). He works on both the Palaeolithic and Bronze Age components of the project, his primary artefact study responsibility being the Mesolithic and Bronze Age flaked stone assemblages, and the stone objects from the peak sanctuary complex. As a mode of productive procrastination, he has also sorted over 70 crates of heavy residue…

Many congratulations to Mackenzie Harris who was awarded one of the American School of Prehistoric Research Archaeological Field School Scholarships from the Archaeological Institute of America, which supports her participation with SNAP this season.

McKenzie will be starting her fourth year at McMaster University in the Fall as a double major doing Honours Political Science and Anthropology.

Join us this Friday May 16 at 7pm for the Naxos opening of our new exhibit! A public lecture by the project’s co-director (Prof. Tristan Carter) will take place at 7:30.
