Stelida Naxos Archaeological Project - SNAP We're excavating in Naxos, Greece & looking at prehistoric stone tools! Σκάβοντας και ψάχνοντας για λίθινα εργαλεία στη Νάξο!

The Stelida Naxos Archaeological Project (SNAP) is a geo-archaeological survey and excavation of a chert (a type of stone) source and early prehistoric stone tool workshops, thought to date back as far as 260,000 years ago. Interestingly, some of its early visitors likely include Neanderthals. Personal messages from co-director Dr. Tristan Carter are signed "–TC".

Happy International Archaeology Day! Swipe through to see the SNAP team throughout the years.

Since 2013 we have provided tuition free experimental education to 82 undergraduates from Canada, Greece, France, UK, and US plus 51 graduate students! We are extremely proud of this and thank all the agencies, donors, and the Municipality of Naxos for our ability to make this invaluable experience possible.

We wanted to take the chance to feature several of our senior staff members.

Shannon Crewson is one of our longest-standing team members. She has curated both the 2018 and 2025 exhibitions, visit Stelida.org to see them! Her primary artifact study is the metal from the Bronze Age component of the site. During the 2023 season, she found a stray kitten in Vivlos who she adopted, swipe to see Souvalki!!

We wanted to take the chance to feature several of our senior staff members.

Danica Mihailović focuses on Palaeolithic stone-tool technologies and the long-term exploitation of the Stelida chert source on Naxos, shedding light on how Neanderthals and early modern humans adapted to changing landscapes over hundreds of thousands of years and serves as a scientific illustrator.

When not analyzing or illustrating stone tools, she can usually be found conducting “field research” on the most wind-sheltered beaches of Naxos.
