We wanted to take the chance to feature several of our senior staff members. Last, but not least:

Matthew Harder is our GIS and topography specialist. He will also be studying the architecture from the site. We are pleased to announce that he began his role as Assistant Professor of Ancient Mediterranean Archaeology at the University of Florida a few weeks ago!

We wanted to take the chance to feature several of our senior staff members.

Shannon Crewson is one of our longest-standing team members. She has curated both the 2018 and 2025 exhibitions, visit Stelida.org to see them! Her primary artifact study is the metal from the Bronze Age component of the site. During the 2023 season, she found a stray kitten in Vivlos who she adopted, swipe to see Souvalki!!

We wanted to take the chance to feature several of our senior staff members.

Danica Mihailović focuses on Palaeolithic stone-tool technologies and the long-term exploitation of the Stelida chert source on Naxos, shedding light on how Neanderthals and early modern humans adapted to changing landscapes over hundreds of thousands of years and serves as a scientific illustrator.

When not analyzing or illustrating stone tools, she can usually be found conducting “field research” on the most wind-sheltered beaches of Naxos.

We wanted to take the chance to feature several of our members who are currently utilizing our material for their masters projects.

Travis Shaw, an incoming MA student at McMaster University, joins us on Naxos for the first time to get a head start on his MA project. His work focuses on emery stones, the dense, heavy, abrasive raw metamorphic material that is native to Naxos, but not to Stelida. Travis aims to detail what emery was used for during the Palaeolithic and the Bronze Age.

We wanted to take the chance to feature several of our specialists.

Marie N. Pareja (Nikki) works on the Bronze Age components of the site. Her primary artifact study responsibility is the plaster. She has been working with the team on and off since 2017, excavating both the Palaeolithic and Bronze Age deposits.

The AIA is proud to recognize Marie Pareja (Salisbury University) with the 2027 Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award.

Marie is an Assistant Professor of Art History at Salisbury University and a specialist in Bronze Age Aegean art and archaeology. She has previously served as an AIA Traveling Lecturer.

Ahead of the Awards Ceremony during the 2027 Annual Meeting, we spoke with Marie about the mentors and experiences that shaped her career, her passion for teaching, and her favorite moments in the classroom.

We wanted to take the chance to feature several of our members who are currently utilizing our material for their masters projects.

Emma Lipsett, MA student from McMaster University, joined the team in 2023 as an undergraduate assistant, during which time she became interested in the projects assemblage of over 10,000 pebbles. Since then, Emma has been completing a first of its kind analysis of the pebbles, attempting to reconstruct the movement of people to the peak sanctuary through the identification of pebble rock types and where on Naxos they come from. This research is the focus of her soon to be completed Masters thesis. Emma has never sorted a crate of heavy residue…

We wanted to take the chance to feature several of our members who are currently utilizing our material for their masters projects.

Nico Carere, MA student from McMaster University, is working on the cut marks left on animal bones to better understand butchery and tool use at Bronze Age Stelida. He hopes to create a clearer picture of prehistoric culinary practices at the Stelida peak sanctuary. This past season he created silicone molds of the cut marks for further microscopic analysis.
