CONFIRMED: Oxygen can be created without photosynthesis.

Scientists have discovered that the deep ocean produces oxygen without sunlight, challenging the belief that photosynthesis is the only source of life-sustaining air.

In the absolute darkness 13,000 feet below the Pacific surface, a team led by the Scottish Association for Marine Science has discovered "dark oxygen," produced entirely without sunlight.

While surveying the Clarion-Clipperton Zone, researchers identified polymetallic nodules—potato-sized rocks rich in cobalt and nickel—that function as natural "geobatteries." These electrically charged rocks generate enough voltage to trigger seawater electrolysis, a chemical process that splits H2O into hydrogen and oxygen. This finding overturns centuries of biological theory which held that only photosynthetic life like plants and algae could generate oxygen.

This geological breakthrough could rewrite the origins of life on Earth, suggesting that aerobic organisms may have evolved in the deep sea long before photosynthesis began on the surface. However, the discovery also introduces a significant conflict for the green energy transition. These same oxygen-producing nodules are the primary targets for deep-sea mining companies seeking metals for electric vehicle batteries. By harvesting these minerals, we may inadvertently destroy the very mechanisms that oxygenate and sustain the abyssal ecosystem, forcing scientists to urgently reassess the ecological costs of mineral extraction.

A lost world the size of Maryland has been uncovered under a mile of Antarctic ice…

Hidden beneath a mile of ice in East Antarctica’s Wilkes Land, researchers have mapped a massive landscape that has been shrouded in darkness for over 34 million years.

Using advanced ice-penetrating radar and satellite imagery, scientists identified a 12,000-square-mile network of ancient river valleys, ridges, and plateaus. Unlike most glacial regions where moving ice grinds away the surface, the slow-moving ice in this sector has acted as a perfect time capsule, preserving the terrain exactly as it looked before the continent was sealed in its frozen tomb.

This discovery provides a rare geological snapshot of the late Eocene period, when Antarctica was still a lush, forested environment. By analyzing these ancient features, scientists hope to understand the dramatic climate transition that turned the continent from green to white. Future drilling missions aim to extract ancient soils and organic material from the buried valleys, offering critical clues about how the Antarctic ice sheet might respond to modern warming. As we uncover more of this hidden world, we gain a clearer picture of Earth's past and a more urgent understanding of its future stability.

This is Al-Khazneh also known as the Treasury in the ancient site of Petra in Jordan. The area around the site was first inhabited in 7000 BC and a Bedouin tribe called the Nabateans settled here around the fourth century BC.

During the Hellenistic and Roman period, the site became an important caravaan centre on the trading routes between Arabia, Egypt and the Mediterranean.

Several buildings at Petra were carved directly into the rock, some of them have clear Hellenistic features. The Treasury for example has ornate Corinthian columns, bas-relief Amazons and fanciful acroteria, bush was most likely built during the Roma period as the Mausoleum of the Nabatean king Aretas IV in the first century AD.

Another interesting feature of the Petra, also known as Raqmu, is an ingenious water system that could sustain a population of 30 000 people as well as a theatre that could seat 6000 spectators.
