Ξεκίνησε σήμερα η ετήσια αφορμή συνάντησης όλων εμας των παράξενων 🤠, βυζαντινών αρχαιολόγων και ιστορικών τέχνης, το Συμπόσιο της Χριστιανικής Αρχαιολογικής Εταιρείας που φιλοξενείται στο Βυζαντινό Μουσείο.

Φετινό ειδικό θέμα του Συμποσίου η βυζαντινή ύπαιθρος, μια ευρεία έννοια που συμπυκνώνει πολλά και ενδιαφέροντα πράγματα, όλα έξω από τα τείχη των πόλεων και κάπου στους αγρούς και στα χωριά της Ύστερης Αρχαιότητας και του Μεσαίωνα. Έχω την τιμή να παρουσιάζω αύριο μια από τις κεντρικές εισηγήσεις του ειδικού συμποσίου με θέμα:
"Αρχαιολογικές προσεγγίσεις στο βυζαντινό αγροτικό τοπίο: παρόν και μέλλον"

Some very sad news.

The BIAA is deeply saddened by the passing of Prof Stephen Mitchell FBA, and sends its condolences to his family at this difficult time.

Professor Mitchell was an outstanding scholar of Hellenistic, Roman and Late Antique Anatolia, and served the Institute as Council Member, Honorary Secretary and Chair. He will be sorely missed by everyone at the Institute, and by his many former students, fellow scholars and friends in Türkiye, the UK and Germany.

Excavation and its people / Η ανασκαφή και οί άνθρωποί της / Kazı ve çalışanları - Amorium

Archaeological excavation is always about its people, the people performing it, leading it, creating it, learning from it; all of them making something new out of the oldest possible materials and the most modern tools. Looking back at those people and the history of each excavation is a way to remember that we are the ones making our past as we are the ones to make our future. All this came to mind by looking at some old photos of Amorium excavation from around 1989, with its first director Martin Harrison and the young lads and kids of the village of Hisarköy, I met many of them as grown ups in 2002 and by now are the elders of the village.

Our research at BALAA so far will be presented tomorrow (19 Oct 2023) by Nikos Tsivikis at the "Envisioning the Greek Landscape: From Thera to Climate Change" conference with a paper entitled "Environmental Challenges to Agricultural Production in a Transforming Byzantine Landscape (6th-12th c.): The Archaeological View."
