Orthodox Easter in 🇬🇷
In Greece, Orthodox Easter is the most important holiday of the year.
On Holy Saturday night, people go to church to receive the Holy Light—the flame miraculously brought from the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Everyone lights their candles from this sacred flame, spreading its glow throughout the congregation as fireworks light up the sky. At midnight, we greet one another with “Christ is Risen!” (“Christos Anesti!”).
After church, we return home to enjoy magiritsa, a traditional Easter soup.
Then on Easter Sunday, the big feast begins! Families gather, roast lamb on a spit, drink wine, and celebrate with music and dancing.
