Advisory || The Guyana Fire Service is urging all members of the public to desist from using non-approved containers for the storage of fuel. This practice poses a significant fire and explosion hazard. Improper containers such as drink bottles, water jars, glass containers, and other unsuitable vessels can easily rupture, leak and ignite, leading to devastating consequences such as extensive property damage, serious injuries or loss of life.

In accordance with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards, fuel must only be stored in:
1. Approved metal safety cans with flame arresters.
2. Certified plastic fuel containers designed specifically for petroleum storage.

3. Containers that are clearly labelled, leak proof and fitted with secure caps.

Households are advised to store only limited quantities of fuel for domestic use (not exceeding 5 gallons or approximately 20 litre) unless permission is granted by the Guyana Fire Service to store larger quantities.

Persons desirous of storing fuel in excess of the recommended amount must:
Apply in writing to the Guyana Fire Service, Fire Prevention Department on:
1. The Quantity and type of fuel being stored.
2. Storage location and safety measures in place.
3. ID, TIN and transport, title or lease.
4. After submission, an inspection of the premises will be carried out by a Fire Prevention Officer to verify storage conditions.
Failure to comply will result in penalties under the Fire Prevention Act, Chapter 22:01.

Fuel storage safety.
1. Store fuel in a cool and ventilated area, away from direct sunlight.
2. Keep fuel away from open flames, electrical equipment, and other heat sources.
3. Never store fuel inside living areas, vehicles or near exits.
4. Ensure storage containers are tightly sealed and properly labelled.
5. Keep fuel out of reach of children and unauthorized persons.
6. Keep a fire extinguisher readily available and ensure it is in working condition.
7. Install smoke detectors where applicable.
8. Do not smoke near fuel storage area.
9. In case of any spillage, ventilate and clean the area immediately.
10. In the event of a fire, evacuate immediately and call the Guyana Fire Service on 912.

|| Deputy Chief Fire Officer Mr. Dwayne Scotland, BSc, delivered an inspiring speech to recruits at the Guyana Fire Service Training School, along with an engaging lecture on Fire Engineering Science (Hydraulics).

Mr. Scotland reminded the recruits that modern firefighting requires more than just courage. It demands a solid understanding of the science behind effective firefighting operations, which ultimately saves lives.

DCFO Scotland also encouraged the recruits to approach their training with discipline and purpose, emphasizing that they represent the next generation of firefighters who will strengthen and improve the Service. 🔥🇬🇾

𝐆𝐮𝐲𝐚𝐧𝐚 𝐅𝐢𝐫𝐞 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐌𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞

Aiming to encourage staff to intentionally manage their mental health and well-being and take actionable steps when needed, the Guyana Fire Service is prioritizing the well-being of its workers by hosting a one-day Mental Health Awareness Workshop, held today Thursday, February 25, 2026, at its headquarters, Homestretch Avenue.

The workshop was facilitated by Mental Health Advocate, Mr. Antoine Craigwell, and was attended by all ranks of firefighters, emergency medical technicians (EMTs), civilian staff, and staff of the Ministry of Home Affairs and sub-agency staff.

Throughout the workshop, staff examined the following areas of knowledge:

• Mental health across cultures
• Ancestral Memories and Intergenerational Trauma
• Factors that contributes to su***de
• Self-care and Self-harm
• Effects of Poor Mental Heath
• Preventions, Solutions and Interventions
• Stress, Anxiety and Depression
• Coping mechanism and solutions

Mental health refers to a person's overall emotional, psychological, and social well-being. According to the World Health Organization, mental health is a state in which an individual realizes their abilities, can cope with normal stresses of life, work productively, and contribute to their community. Mental health awareness is the process of educating individuals and societies about mental well-being, mental disorders, and the importance of early support and care.

The Mental Health Awareness Workshop was coordinated by Ms. Simonica Cooper, the Guyana Fire Services welfare and social worker.

The exercise emphasized personnel readiness, discipline, and equipment accountability.

Guyana Fire Service Responds to Multi-Vehicle Accident on Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge

The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) advises that firefighters and Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) responded this morning, Thursday, January 29, 2026, to a traffic accident on the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge. Preliminary reports indicate that six (6) vehicles were involved.

The GFS deployed one (1) fire tender and two (2) EMS ambulances, supported by a team of four (4) firefighters and eight (8) EMTs.

Upon arrival, firefighters used hydraulic extrication equipment, including the Jaws of Life and a spreader, to cut and open a vehicle and safely extricate one critically injured person who was trapped. EMTs provided immediate emergency medical care at the scene and transported the injured individual to a medical facility for further treatment.

The Guyana Fire Service remains on location and continues to support ongoing response operations. Members of the public are urged to exercise caution, reduce speed, and avoid the area where possible to allow emergency teams to work safely and efficiently.
