Life Is About The Choices We Make
Life does not always give us control over what happens, what we control is what we do next. Every day, we make choices, some seem small and others change the direction of our lives. We choose whether to stay or leave, to speak or remain silent, to take the risk or choose security, to prepare for tomorrow or leave tomorrow to chance.
Employment is a choice and so is entrepreneurship. There is dignity in both choices but the choices come with different risks. An employee might choose the certainty of a salary, paid leave and greater predictability. An entrepreneur might choose uncertainty, long hours, financial risk and the responsibility of finding enough money to pay salaries, suppliers, taxes and operating expenses before paying themselves. Neither choice makes one person better than the other and we should respect the choices people make.
If you choose employment, do not spend your time counting the entrepreneur's money and deciding what they should be able to afford. Revenue is not profit and what a business earns is not automatically what its owner takes home. The entrepreneur made choices you might not have been prepared to make and they accepted risks you might not have wanted to carry.
Respect must work both way, entrepreneurs should also respect people who chose employment as they provide skills, discipline and consistency that businesses depend upon every day. Choosing a salary and a structured career path as well as financial predictability is a legitimate life choice. Not everyone wants to build a business and carry financial risk or manage the uncertainty that comes with ownership. ‘If we all run business who would be the employees’….LD-B. Success in not measured by whether you sign the pay cheque or receive it.
The same applies to life, we cannot choose security and demand the rewards of risk. We cannot avoid sacrifice and resent the results of someone who made different sacrifices. Make the choices that are right for your life and respect the choices others make for theirs. We need to then take responsibility for where your choices lead because eventually, your choices become your life!
