Hello September!

Sapphire is the birthstone for September and is prized for its durability and brilliant blue colour.

Although blue is the most recognized variety, sapphires naturally occur in several colours, including yellow, pink, green, and white. They are a variety of the mineral corundum and rank 9 on the Mohs hardness scale, making them one of the hardest natural gemstones.

Fun fact: The Hope Diamond is one of the world’s MOST famous gems, and its recorded history spans over four centuries! Here is what we know:

1660s: French merchant Jean-Baptiste Tavernier purchased a rough 112-carat blue stone in India and sold it to King Louis XIV of France in 1668.

The French Blue: King Louis XIV had it recut into the "French Blue" (67 carats). It was a prized centerpiece of the French Crown Jewels until it was stolen during the French Revolution in 1792.

The Hope Name: The diamond resurfaced in London in the early 1800s, likely recut to disguise its identity. It was eventually acquired by Henry Philip Hope, from whom it gets its current name.

The McLean Era: In 1911, it was purchased by the French jeweler Pierre Cartier, who sold it to eccentric Washington D.C. socialite Evelyn Walsh McLean.

Final Resting Place: Famed jeweler Harry Winston bought the gem from McLean's estate in 1949 and, in 1958, mailed it in a simple brown paper package to the Smithsonian Institution. It remains on permanent public display at the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C.

The recent workshop hosted by the Ministry of Natural Resources, in collaboration with the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Labour & Manpower Planning, provided important information to stakeholders on the requirements and regulations governing foreign workers in the mining sector.

GGDMA remains committed to supporting its members through greater awareness, collaboration and adherence to the regulatory framework.
