PRESS RELEASE by

The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) on

GCCI Commends the Government of Guyana for the Carbon Credits sale to Hess Corporation - Another Historic 'Green' Win for Guyana.

-START-

The Georgetown Chamber of Commerce and Industry (GCCI) congratulates the Government of Guyana on its recent agreement with Hess Corporation, a consortium partner in Guyana's offshore oil sector, for the sale of $750 million worth of carbon credits. In attendance at the event to commemorate the agreement were key stakeholders including His Excellency, Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali; President of Guyana, Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo, and John Hess, Managing Director of Hess Corp.

The sale of carbon credits which covers ten years 2022-2032, will see Guyana being compensated for keeping its rainforests intact. GCCI understands that the purchase by Hess will be for 2.5 million credits per year for the years 2016-2030. The purchases will occur in the period 2022-2032.

GCCI applauds the government for making Guyana the first country to complete the ART process (Architecture for REDD+ Transactions) for generating high-integrity, Paris Agreement-aligned carbon credits that will allow Guyana to access market-based finance to continue to implement forest stewardship strategies.

Following the 2009 Norway REDD+ agreement and COP27, GCCI sees this second agreement as an indication that highly developed nations are increasingly recognizing the value of forest climate services. We are also pleased to note that 30% of the $750 million will be allocated to Indigenous Amerindian communities as outlined in the Low Carbon Development Strategy 2030.

With rising sea levels, warmer temperatures, and more adverse weather conditions, climate change is evident. In June 2021, Guyana experienced severe flooding in several regions, adversely affecting the agriculture and infrastructure sectors and compromising food security. This agreement assists Guyana in building its resilience to climate change and transitioning to a sustainably stable economy.

The National Mining Syndicate will be working with the Ministry of Labor and our sister organizations to ensure that our miners remain safe, and protected from occupational accidents and/or fatalities. It is our vision that such a collaboration will also encourage all in the sector to adopt safer, more responsible practices, while we strategize to come up with solutions that will solve the labor problems that are consistently prevalent within the industry.
We would therefore like to thank the honorable Minister Joseph Hamilton for recognizing us as a major stakeholder, and for calling upon us to join him in this venture.

The President & Directors of the National Mining Syndicate Inc. recently met with the Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission in order to discuss the future of Guyana's ASGM miners. The meeting's packed agenda included safer mining practices, mercury-free technology and mining in an environmentally sustainable and responsible manner, GGMC's commitment to Guyana's miners and the extractive industry, compliance, and other areas of collaboration which would ensure that Guyana's small miners are once again given opportunities to work on mineral-rich properties without the burden of landlordism and exorbitant operational fees.

On this note, we would like to wholeheartedly thank the Commissioner Mr. Newell Denisson, and Deputy Commissioner Ms. Diane McDonald for their continued cooperation, support, and commitment towards a positive technical and economical change for Guyana's small miners.

Let's talk a little about mercury

Continuing from our post on , let's take moment to talk about mercury.

Mercury has been a part of our household items for many years and some of us may not be aware!

When these household items are broken or disposed of through backyard burning of waste, mercury vapour is released in the air!

We can be exposed to the vapour through inhalation or the mercury vapour can travel long distances affecting others and the environment along the way.

Our role in achieving is simple. We must ensure the proper disposal of existing mercury-containing products and ensure that we choose mercury-free alternatives in the future!
