Banknotes of Fukien🚢

Due to its location, Fujian has long played key roles in Chinese history – from being home to China’s largest port in the Song Dynasty, assisting with Zheng He’s voyages to the Western Ocean in the Ming Dynasty to now becoming one of China’s most affluent provinces.

Fujian’s importance to China in the 20th century can be seen in its banknotes as showcased in Spink China’s June auction. With Central Bank issues during early stages of Northern Expedition, local private issues from D**g Shan country in the 1910s and Jiangxi-Fujian Soviet issues.

The Span of Banque de l'Indochine

Established in 1875, with branches spanning from Pondicherry, Yokohama, and Hong Kong to the Polynesia. Their first banknotes, printed by the Bank of France in 1876, quickly became popular for trade – helped by the familiarity Chinese traders already had with banknotes from their use in Hong Kong and Singapore.

Its influence on the economy and trade in Asia and the Pacific during the late 19th to early 20th century cannot be underestimated.

東方匯理銀行的勢力範圍

該行成立於1875年，分行網絡遍及龐迪謝里、橫濱、香港乃至波利尼西亞。其首批紙鈔由法國銀行於1876年印製，得益於華裔商人在香港與新加坡經商時對紙鈔的熟悉，東方匯理銀行的行鈔很快便在貿易中廣受歡迎。該銀行在19世紀末至20世紀初對亞洲及太平洋地區的經濟與貿易有著舉足輕重的影響。

When Tradition Meets Religion.
The 12 Chinese Zodiac animals have always held a revered status in traditional Chinese culture, making the lunar series a recurring and popular theme in modern numismatic and philatelic collections.

However, the present piece dates back to the Song Dynasty. This charm depicts an Ox next to an incense burner, symbolising the purification of one's body and mind. The celestial being on the right is one of the star deities of the North Pole (Big Dipper), which corresponds to the zodiac sign one is associated with at birth. In this particular case, the Year of the Ox is linked with Merak (β Ursae Majoris). Together with the Taoist spells on the reverse, this charm offers a more personalised form of protection.

十二生肖在中國傳統文化中向來備受尊崇，因此十二生肖系列是當代錢幣與郵票收藏中經常出現且廣受歡迎的主題。然而，本藏品可追溯至宋代，這枚花錢下方有一頭牛於香爐旁供奉本命星官，寓意淨化身心。右側為身穿道袍的星官。本命星官與人出生時所屬的生肖相對應，《北斗經》指巨門是丑亥生人所屬的星君，因此這枚花錢連同背面所刻的道教符篆「九疊篆」賦予了更為個人化的護佑力量。

A classic Hong Kong rarity 🇭🇰

The price guides say so, the auction catalogues and market prices do back it up. The diminutive 1905 Hong Kong silver 20 cents is a very rare coin – despite it having a much higher reported mintage than 1902 and 1904 combined (the only other two years of the same denomination with the Edward VII bust).

The reason why so few surviving examples remain is because the Royal Mint almost melted the entire emission. While there’s no official record to explain the decision, one can look further into Hong Kong’s coinage history to see that the next officially minted silver coin for Hong Kong was the 1932 5 cents – a good 27 years later.

It’s not hard to conjecture that during the period, there was an excess of silver coins in circulation, hence new orders were suspended, and in 1905's case, actively recalled. Thus every single one remaining in modern collections rightfully commands a premium.

一枚經典的香港稀有錢幣 🇭🇰

價格指南如此記載，拍賣圖錄和市場價格也佐證了這一點。儘管其官方鑄造量遠高於1902年與1904年的總和（而這兩個年份是僅有的另外兩枚面額相同兼鑄有愛德華七世的貳毫錢幣），這枚體積細小的1905年香港貳毫銀幣卻是一枚極為罕見的錢幣。

現存實物如此稀少的原因在於當年皇家鑄幣局幾乎將整批銀幣熔毀。雖然沒有官方紀錄能解釋這項決定的緣由，但若深入探究香港的鑄幣歷史，便會發現下一枚為香港正式鑄造的銀幣是1932年的五仙幣，這已是整整27年之後的事了。

不難推測，在此期間流通的銀幣過剩，因此暫停了新訂單，而就1905年而言，更是整批回收銷毀。由此可見，1905年香港貳毫的高價是有充分的歷史依據去支持的。

The Pioneer – Commercial Bank of China

Founded in Shanghai by Mr. Sheng Xuan Huai in 1897 under the name of the Imperial Bank of China, it was the first of many in China's monetary history — including the first Chinese-owned bank to operate under the modern banking system, the first to order banknotes from foreign printers, and the first to employ foreigners. Most notably, Andrew Wright Maitland was hired out of retirement from HSBC. The bank's adoption of HSBC's banking guidelines earned it a strong reputation among both local and foreign investors.
