λ A LARGE CHINESE FULL-TIP RHINOCEROS HORN CARVING, QING DYNASTY, MID 19TH CENTURY
清 狩獵山水紋犀角雕
Well carved with a continuous scene of a processional hunting party around a mountain, a tiger hiding in the undergrowth, a stag nearby, pagodas amongst pine trees, the lower mountain path with a procession of musicians and a sedan chair being carried yonder

This large carving is unusual in its exceptional weight at 5,392g as full-tipped carvings are usually pierced and reticulated, which significantly reduces their weight. Normally such carvings are inverted, supported on their tip and held by elaborate carved wooden stands. The present example would appear to be exceptionally rare among the Guangzhou carvers art with no other ‘mountain’ being carved in this way
