【How to Start a Consulting Business?】

Defining the Terms:

You may have heard several different terms used for people who work for themselves.

Here is a brief list of the most common terms and their definitions.

1) Entrepreneur
A person who owns and operates their own business.

2) Consultant
A person who provides expert advice professionally.

3) Freelancer
A person who completes specific projects on a per-assignment basis, typically for a number of companies at once.

4) Contractor
A person who completes technical work on a per-assignment basis, typically for one company at a time.

Do You Have What It Takes?

【Consultants usually have the following qualities:】

 Good business sense and common sense
 Curiosity about the world around them
 Desire to help others
 Confident
 Persuasive
 Optimistic yet realistic
 Passionate about what they do
 Strong knowledge in the areas that they work in
 Professional, positive image
 Committed to lifelong learning

In addition, the following skill sets are often used in consulting:

 Communication (listening, speaking, and writing)
 Negotiation
 Resiliency
 Change management
 Time management and personal productivity
 Problem solving and decision making
 Basic financial management

Identify one of these items that you would like to work on.

【Business Building Blocks】

Who Are You?

Identifying the Possibilities:

In order to be successful as a consultant, you need to have a clear focus on your area of business. Think about what areas of expertise you have and how you could leverage that into a consulting practice. You may be able to combine several different areas, which can help you stand out from the crowd.

【Doing Your Research】

Now it’s time to find out what the market needs. If, for example, you have 20 years of experience in a particular technology, but no one is buying that technology anymore, there probably isn’t much point in pursuing a consulting business in that field.

Use industry journals, the Internet, and your network to find out what areas of interest are growing. Keep an eye out for new and evolving niche markets that are underserved.

If you find a niche market where you have most, but not all, of the expertise required, don’t immediately discard the idea. Part of being a consultant is committing to learning. You can focus on the aspects that you do know and learn the parts that are new to you as you build your business.

【The Three Elements】

Now that you’ve done some thinking and some research, you can develop a clear focus for your consulting business. Your focus should contain three elements.

【Service】
What type of service will you be offering? Describing the service as a verb can help, such as:

 Analyzing
 Coaching
 Improving
 Publishing
 Designing

【Segment】

What industry and sub-industry will you focus on? Some examples:

 Healthcare executives
 Network security technology firms
 Mining companies
 Consumer banks

【Site】

What geographic location will you be focusing on? You may want to start in a small area that you know has demand for your service. Or, perhaps you will be providing services online, so a wider geographic area might be an appropriate focus.

【Bringing It All Together】

Once you have identified these three elements, you can bring it all together to create a narrow focus for your consulting business. Here are a few examples.

 Offering process improvement analysis and design for technology-focused manufacturing companies in the Asia.
 Providing leadership coaching to mining executives in Asia.
 Analyzing traffic and predicting growth in Asia.

【Taking it Further】

Once you’ve developed your focus, there are a few additional things that you can do to refine it further.

First, try to create a unique approach for your services. If you know of other consultants that offer A, B, and C separately, perhaps you can offer a service that offers all of those things combined (and maybe even add a bit of D!).

What to consider when relocating overseas?

People choose to relocate overseas for a myriad of reasons. Better life, better opportunities, better education for their family, or perhaps migrating because they feel the time has come for them to place their roots elsewhere.

Deciding to locate overseas is a very big decision. Huge, in fact you are going to relocate your entire life, and if you come with a family, you are going to relocate your entire family’s life. Living abroad is going to be vastly different from living in your own home country where everything is familiar, and you are in your comfort zone.

It’s a big world out there and there are plenty of countries to choose from. Each person would have their own preference of a country they would like to relocate to and depending on what they happen to be looking for.

Moving and living in another country is another whole experience compared to visiting destinations. Are you considering relocation to another country? There are things to consider before you relocate to another country.

1. Relocation/Citizenship Investment

Some countries offer simple relocation policies. Others don’t. Before moving countries, make sure you are going to be allowed and welcome with as little hassle as possible. Do you need a visa to visit? What is the country’s relocation policy? What are the advantages of residency in your dream country?

2. Living arrangements

It is important to look at the housing market before moving. Consider the cost of rental rates, ownership costs and availability. One of the first things you want to do is buying a home a car. The best option is to give it sometime, don’t make any major purchasing for at least a year, until you have a full idea about the local culture and customs and business climate, there might be a strict and a whole different rules and regulations when it comes to buying property and vehicle ownership, as well as registration and paperwork demands. So, give it some time until you take some useful information from locals and make full research about it. You also want to major the costs and taxes of having these things like the car and furniture shipments or buying them locally.

3. Import taxes, Shipping costs, Duty on Household Goods

How easy it is going to be to move your belongings overseas? What will you take with you and what will you leave behind? This will vary from country to country and it’s a good idea to discuss these issues with an expert. Some countries do allow expats to bring in almost all their possessions tax free, including vehicles. There are others that limit what you can bring by placing tax on imports. You also need to consider the location of the country versus where your goods are. Where will your goods arrive and how will you get them home?
Remember to check duty rates, too, and acquire an accurate bill of lading along with a customs freight forwarder.

4. Language barriers

What language does the country you are moving demand you to have? Can they also speak your language?
If you are moving to a new country that you can speak the basics of its language, you will find it really hard to fully express yourself, and you might also get mail such as bills and government paperwork that you need to fill out. Before you move to another country try to research and guidelines about the legal or registration things that you need to do before you arrive. You may also have to sign contracts that you do not understand, and you don’t want to sig things you can read. You can go to translation services to help you translate the important documents. Also, you might consider taking intensive language courses once you arrive.

5. Culture

You will find it challenging once you arrive at another country and get to know the local culture, the way that people interact when working, shopping, doing business and in gatherings. But it is also a source of beauty and fascinating to get to experience and knowing new cultures from different countries. Be naturally curious about being open to the outside world, learn the local saying, the customs, celebrate holidays and make local friends.

6. Working or doing business

How will you support yourself and your family when you move abroad? Will you have a job? Open a new business? Or do you have enough savings or passive income? Thinking about your income is one of the most important aspects to consider before moving.

There are some issues in some countries where the rules and regulations allow you to work or not, some of them require a working visa or permanent residence, so make sure you research the country first. There are jobs that you can do anywhere in the word, where the internet can be assessed to any online job such as web development and designing. If you want to open you own business, first you have to make full marketing research before opening any local business and go for low-risk consistent paychecks, keep your business simple.

7. Visas

When you are moving abroad make sure you legally can, and whether you need a working visa or permanent visa, or something else that will allow you to stay. Some people want to become citizens and others want to only have a tourist visa, some people want to make their own business or open a new branch in that country, then you might have to do over the border and renew your visa. Sometimes there is a huge benefit to becoming a citizen and sometimes there are none, so it depends on the country you are going to, so do your homework and talk to another people who had the same experience, because it could be a long expensive process for you to establish a new residency.

8. Services and facilities

You should consider the services that are available in the country you are moving if you are used to a certain standard of living. You have to make sure that you live close to some important facilities like it is important to have access to all shopping area where you can buy all the necessities without going too far, medical clinics, schools and many more.

9. Medical

What is the healthcare situation like in the country you want to move to? How is the availability, cost, and accessibility of the services?

It’s really important to be aware of the medical services that are available in your community, and how they are rated for quality and consistency, as well as access to prescriptions medication. Some people have medical conditions, or they have a family member with a disability, so they want to move to a country with less expensive medical care.

10. Education

What is the education outlook in the country you want to relocate to? Is education accessible and affordable? What languages are classes available in? Many people relocate to another country for lower cost of living. However, an important long-term consideration is your income, savings and pension in another currency.

11. Safety

People should be careful if they traveled anywhere in the world. But there are countries that are safer than others, and with some common sense, you can stay safe. Don’t walk alone at night with a huge amount of money or jewelry, don’t go to bad areas, and are friends with good locals to show you around and to look after you. Avoid countries that have political issues.

12. Friends and Family

Relocating abroad is very difficult if you are leaving your family and friends behind. You might also feel homesick and lonely and its one of the main things to consider before leaving. Meeting new friends in different destination depending on what job you have, if you go to social events or gathering or being involved in the expat community.

13. Financial

It is important to know the costs of living in the country you are moving so you would have an idea about the budget you need to start off with your new life, you need first to research before moving. There are many forums and websites that could give you some important information about the costs of the country you are going to.

Ultimately, relocation is an exciting thing to do. It is an open door for new opportunities, to learn about different cultures, to visit new places, meet new people, and a new life to start. The bottom line is that you should be flexible in order to successfully doing that and in order to face every difficulty and challenging situations. If you can do this, it will be enjoying and easier for you to live in another country.

Conclusion

There is literally a world of opportunities at your fingertips, but you need to be properly prepared and do thorough research. A well-thought out destination is going to be better for your health, happiness, and personal satisfaction.
