Ran a workshop on careers in Banking and Consulting which was very well received. Q&A lasted about an hour with many students having a heavy interest in these two industries.

My key point to them is these two industries typically require long hours for various reasons and it would be extremely difficult to have a long career if you do not like what you are doing.

Focus on what you like and you will enjoy building your career. Don’t do it just for the money. You will end up hating your life and your job.

I have always had a mentor in my life. I thought that was sufficient. Now that I understand what a coach does, I wish I had a coach early on in my career. It would help me avoid many disastrous situations where I acted incorrectly, in an unskilled manner.

For example I once had a new boss who, in my opinion, did not know what he was doing. I reacted badly and in the end he came up with some lousy excuse to fire me. On hindsight, I could have reacted differently to win his trust and keep my job.
