| Villa E.1027 – A masterpiece of architecture that would make Le Corbusier pale with envy
Eileen Gray strives for a comprehensive interior concept in her various designs. She showed her ability as early as 1919 when she renovated Mrs. Mathieu Levy’s flat in Rue Lota and continued her creative path when she designed the iconic Villa E.1027 in 1929. Eileen Gray wanted her architecture to be more than just functional buildings – she wanted them to be alive and to appeal to people’s senses as well as their minds. Wall quotes such as ‘Défense de rire’ (Laughter forbidden) or ‘Entrez lentement’ (Enter slowly) were intended to reinforce this idea and encourage visitors to become more aware of their surroundings. Le Corbusier, increasingly envious of Gray’s work, painted murals on several walls of the house without her consent – an act that many saw as an attempt to appropriate her work. Ironically, Le Corbusier died in 1965 while swimming just a few metres from Villa E.1027.
All Eileen Gray designs are authorized by The World Licence Holder Aram Designs Ltd, London.
