《彼我之間:交織的時代》|「我和貓是朋友關係」——藤田嗣治的線條、女性與貓
如果說「狂熱年代」的巴黎是一場流動的饗宴,那麼藤田嗣治便是宴中最惹人注目的東方面孔——西瓜頭、圓框眼鏡、懷中永遠有一隻貓。
本次《彼我之間:交織的時代》展覽中,我們將帶領觀眾走進這位留法日本畫家的世界:看他如何用東方的筆墨,描摹他深愛的貓、他筆下的女性,以及那個東西方交匯、傳統與現代彼此碰撞的沸騰年代。
畫貓:終其一生的溫柔陪伴
藤田嗣治對貓的迷戀貫穿一生,他曾出版限量500冊的《貓之書》(Book of Cats),收錄了20幅他所鍾愛的貓咪版畫。他曾說:
「我並不是那種沒貓就不能活的人,也不是必須養名貴貓的人。我撿流浪貓養。法國流浪貓不多, 每年會遇到一兩隻。只要被我拾到了,我就會養。」
在本次展出的作品中,他筆下的貓咪姿態各異——或蜷縮、或凝視、或慵懶伸展。他以極細的墨線勾勒輪廓,融合浮世繪中一氣呵成的書法線條,賦予貓咪獨特的生命力與尊嚴。對他而言,貓不僅是寵物,更是他在異鄉孤獨歲月中的陪伴者。
畫女性:珍珠般溫潤的光澤
1920年代,藤田嗣治開始將乳白色系的人像作品發展為自身辨識度極高的創作符號。他一生結過五次婚,每一位妻子都曾擔任他的裸體模特,這些作品以微妙的情色意味著稱。在技法上,他將亞麻籽油、白堊、鉛白、滑石粉與研磨後的牡蠣殼粉調和,創造出獨一無二的純白釉彩。這一底漆融合了油畫的厚重與日本「蛤粉」的細膩,使肌膚呈現絲綢般的光澤與珍珠般的溫潤。背景則簡化為留白或墨線勾勒——東方美學中的「留白」與「線條」,在他筆下與西方繪畫題材達成了一次溫柔的相遇。
畫孩童:漂泊後的純真港灣
藤田嗣治一生沒有孩子,但他筆下反覆出現的小女孩,卻是他最珍視的存在。他曾說:
「我也是一個兒童。我沒有孩子。我畫中的兒童就是我的兒子、我的女兒,是我最愛的孩子。」
1950年代後,經歷了戰火與漂泊,他重返巴黎,皈依天主教,開啟了他第二階段的創作生涯。孩童的純真與希望契合了他此時的內心渴求,畫中的小女孩開始出現宗教般的寧靜氣息。本次展覽中的小女孩肖像,眼神中往往透露出一種超越年齡的凝視——那是藝術家在經歷時代動盪後,透過畫筆尋找的永恆安寧與純真。

Theirs & Ours: Intertwined Times | “I Am Friends with Cats” — Foujita’s Lines, Women, and Cats
If Paris in the “Années folles” was a moving feast, then Léonard Tsuguharu Foujita was its most eye-catching Eastern face — bowl haircut, round glasses, and always a cat in his arms.
In our exhibition Theirs & Ours: Intertwined Times, we invite you to step into the world of this Japanese painter in France: to see how he used Eastern ink and brush to depict the cats he loved, the women he painted, and that fervent era when East met West, tradition collided with modernity.
Painting Cats: A Lifelong Gentle Companionship
Foujita’s obsession with cats lasted his entire life. He once published a limited edition of 500 copies of the Book of Cats, featuring 20 prints of his beloved cats. He once said:
“I’m not like an old lady who can’t live without a cat. And I don’t need a pedigree cat. I take in strays. There aren’t many of them in France, though I do come across one or 2 each year. And I look after them.”
Among this exhibition’s works, his cats appear in various poses — curled up, gazing, or languidly stretching. He outlines their contours with extremely fine ink lines, blending the calligraphic brushstrokes of ukiyo-e — executed in one breath — to give each cat a unique vitality and dignity. For him, cats were not merely pets; they were companions through his lonely years in a foreign land.
Painting Women: A Lustrous Pearlescent Sheen
In the 1920s, Foujita began developing his highly recognizable signature motif: milky-white female portraits. He married five times in his life, and each of his wives served as a n**e model. These works are known for their delicate eroticism. Technically, he blended linseed oil, chalk, lead white, talcum powder, and ground oyster shells to create a unique pure white glaze. This base paint fused the heaviness of oil painting with the delicacy of Japanese “gofun” (clam shell powder), giving the skin a silky lustre, along with a pearly softness. The backgrounds are simplified to blank spaces or ink outlines, where the Eastern aesthetics of “emptiness” and “line” meet Western painting subjects in a gentle embrace.
Painting Children: A Pure Haven After Wandering
Foujita never had children of his own, yet the little girls who repeatedly appear in his work were his dearest existence. He once said:
“I am also a child. I have no children. The children in my paintings are my sons, my daughters — my most beloved children.”
After the 1950s, having experienced war and displacement, Foujita returned to Paris, converted to Catholicism, and began the second phase of his creation. The innocence and hope of children matched his inner longing at this stage, and the little girls in his paintings began to exude a religious serenity. In this exhibition’s portraits of young girls, their eyes often reveal a gaze beyond their ages — the eternal peace and purity that the artist sought through his brush after the turmoil of his times.
