Last Monday, we concluded a thought-provoking session on 'Engagement of Corporations and Philanthropies in the Social Enterprise (SE) Roadmap as a Shared Value Proposition' at the inaugural 2023 National Conference for the SE Roadmap Council convened by the Bayan Innovation Group (BIG) and the Society for the Advancement of Professional Social Entrepreneurship with support from the Ayala Corporation.

Grateful for the insightful contributions of our keynote speaker, Fernando Zobel de Ayala of Ayala Corporation, and fellow panelists Cathy Santamaria of Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) Foundation, Jinky Aguinaldo of Alagang AyalaLand, and Angel Chia of Family Offices Association of Hong Kong!

Special thanks to Professors Carlo Sagun and Jay Bernardo of Bayan Innovation Group for inviting AVA founder Philo Alto to moderate this panel and for including Asia Value Advisors to be a supporting organization for the conference.

Some key takeaways:

- In addition to directly supporting SEs, investing in cross-sector collaborations and stakeholder engagement for SE roadmap development is well worth the effort and resources for lasting outcomes;
- Families with businesses can leverage their convening power to mobilize their peers in both corporates and philanthropies for the betterment of the communities where they live and serve;
- The influence of NextGens in shaping future directions of family businesses and how they live out their life values cannot be underestimated;
- For corporates, creating shared value as an approach to innovate business products, services, and processes that generate social and environmental value whilst being commercially viable;
- Commitment to a shared purpose is crucial, acknowledging the need for different approaches to fit local situations;
- Crucial role of data for tangible impact measurement and management to attract social financing and philanthropic capital;
- Learning from experiences in other countries or cities can lower the political capital needed for local stakeholders’ buy-in and action.
- Sustainability and scalability of the National SE roadmap development can gain from a whole-of-nation ecosystem approach. It can also benefit from having an enabling policy environment across various institutional levels.
- Highlighting exemplary SEs and initiatives like Tatak SE branding can mobilize and deepen community engagement as well as attract future stakeholders to the mission.

On November 10, the Harvard Business School Association of Hong Kong (HBSAHK) hosted a Non-Profit Scholarships Dinner to celebrate twenty years of impact in the Hong Kong non-profit community. The dinner event recognized 65 non-profit leaders from diverse backgrounds who have received these scholarships to attend Harvard Business School’s week-long Strategic Perspectives in Non-profit Management (SPNM) program since 2001.

At this event, AVA founder Philo Alto moderated a Fireside Chat "Looking Back to Look Forward - Evolution of Hong Kong’s Non-Profit Landscape" with our esteemed speakers, Dr. Jane Lee, JP, President of 團結香港基金 Our Hong Kong Foundation, and Dr. Gabriel Leung, Executive Director of Charities and Community at The Hong Kong Jockey Club.

A short recap of some of the takeaways for the evening can be found here.

It was also great to reconnect with and hear from a number of past scholarship awardees, including some who have participated in the second panel. A shout out to Francis Ngai of Social Ventures Hong Kong, Fion Leung of Time Auction, Walter Tsui of CareER, Lucinda Pike of EnrichHK, and Peter Ho of YMCA for sharing their insights gained from the Strategic Perspectives In Non-Profit Management (SPNM) program. Thanks too to Victoria Wisniewski Otero, Pia Wong, and a few other past awardees who shared their reflections during the Open Q&A!

An inspiring highlight demonstrating the power of collaboration was the showing of a video created by the Voice for Social Good consortium that included past SPNM scholarship awardees Sky Siu, Sue Fertal Toomey, aside from Pia Wong, Lucinda Pike. Their advocacy will also soon be featured in Alliance magazine.
