A JetBlue flight from New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport to Punta Caucedo Las Americas Airport in the Dominican Republic was forced to return shortly after takeoff due to unexpected turbulence that resulted in injuries to several passengers and minor damage to the aircraft. The turbulence struck as the plane was climbing through 7,000 to 8,000 feet. One passenger, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time, struck their head on an overhead panel, causing a laceration and damaging part of the cabin.
The flight crew reported that three passengers had been injured during the turbulence event and decided to return to JFK as a precaution. Emergency medical services were requested to meet the aircraft upon arrival. The injured individuals were evaluated once the plane landed safely. One of the injured was a 30-year-old male who suffered a head injury, while details on the other two passengers were still being gathered at the time.
There were 198 people on board, and the aircraft had 24.6 in fuel upon its return. While the turbulence was described as moderate, the injuries and interior damage prompted the crew to prioritize safety and cut the flight short. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of wearing seatbelts at all times during flight, regardless of weather conditions or altitude.
