Where is the smallest volcano in the world? 🌋 Some people claims it is located in Puebla (Mexico), called Cuexcomate. The crater has a diameter of 8 meters and a height of 13 meters. This is formed by a phreatic eruption in 1664, when lava from Popocatapetzl (a large volcano in central Mexico) came into contact with water. This caused a steam explosion that opened up a small crater and accumulation of volcanic materials. However, some may believe that this is a calcareous sinter cone formed by a geyser. Believe it or not!

Fire opal, which display play of colours, is a true treasure well-known in Queretaro, Mexico 🇲🇽✨. Its vibrant red colour comes from trace amounts of iron oxide in the hydrated silica, which is less commonly observed in Australian opal. Opal has been mined here since the Mesoamerica civilisation and became commercial production in the 19th century. Even today, many local families make their living from this beautiful stone.

At the workshop, we watched artisans transform raw fire opal into stunning jewellery, and we even got to search for our own pieces in an open-pit mine 🔍.

What happens when lava meets ice? 🔥🧊Glaciovolcanism happens tens of thousands years ago in southern British Columbia, where the continental ice sheet meets active volcanism of the Canadian Cascade arc. Mt Meager is one of the youngest volcanic field in the region, featuring episodes of eruptions potentially interacts with ice. Plinth eruption occurs in the Pleistocene, when the valley was covered by ice. It produces the Pl unit (Figure 4,5), which occurs on both sides of the valley. 2360 BP eruption occurs in an ice-free period, with lava and block-and-ash flow avalanche breccia (Figure 6) flowing down the valley. Pyroclastic pumice deposits (Figure 7-9) across the valley is the evidence of explosive eruption back in 2360 BP.

The field trip was led by Lucy Porritt and Kelly Russell from the University of British Columbia.

Today, we are looking at the Mount Cayley Volcanic Field, British Columbia (Canada). 🌋 It consists of a series of lava flows dating ~16 thousand years ago. The lava is primarily basaltic and forms columnar joints. 🪨 There are a few fun facts about this formation:
1. Columnar basalt points towards the cooling surface, indicating where glaciers possibly are. Figure 8, hanging columnar basalts pointing towards a valley. 🧊
2. The lava changes in composition, becoming more silica-rich, progressively in eruption phases. Figure 9, from vent location (top left), the youngest lava phase (orange) is more enriched in silica than the older lava (green and blue).
3. Younger lava units are eroded at waterfall and river junctions, exposing older units. Figure 10, patches of older lava (blue) are seen from the Cheakamus river junction. 🏞️

Figure 3, 4: Alexander Falls and 2 eruption phases of basalts

Figure 9, 10: Map with eruption phases in Mount Cayley Volcanic Field (Borch et al., 2023)

Hexagonal columnar joints, an iconic feature of High Island reservoir, are formed by the contraction of volcanic rocks during cooling. 🌋 The orientation of the columns reflects the cooling surface, which lies perpendicular to their direction. In the Garibaldi–Price Volcanic Field (Canada), we found andesitic columnar joints dating back ~69,000 years. 🪨 These columns display evidence of interaction with ice, indicating that the area was covered by the Cordilleran Ice Sheet at the time of their formation.🧊
