Career Hack exists to help Gen Y adapt to and thrive in the rapidly changing global economy. We believe that the burden of unemployment, underemployment, and $1 trillion USD of student loan debt are causing this generation to be at massive risk of becoming a lost generation. We also believe that institutions have failed us. Universities have failed to prepare us for the harsh and rapidly changing
realities of the 21st century economy. The government has failed us by guaranteeing that we will paying off trillions of dollars of national debt throughout our lifetimes. The Boomer Generation has failed us by giving us a financial crisis, an environmental crisis, the bill for two wars, and a diminished national standing in the world. We also believe that it’s time for Gen Y to stop bitching and moaning about their situation, stop ”Occupying Wall Street”, stop griping that the “1%” has stolen opportunities from us, and stop waiting for a personal bailout. SO GET OVER IT. We’ve inherited this crisis. Our generation will be defined by whether we riot in the streets and ask for handouts from the government or by whether we recognize that we, as individuals, will have to pull ourselves out of this. NOBODY forced you to take on $50,000 USD of student loan debt. NOBODY forced you to major in Philosophy, Art History, French Literature, or whatever other non-STEM and thus useless concentration you chose. NOBODY forced you to get drunk at fraternity parties instead of teaching yourself graphic design, SEO, internet marketing, PHP, Ruby on Rails, Python, and a plethora of other digital skills. You had four years to learn these digital skills independently for less than the cost of one university course. You are the culmination of all the choices you have made to this day – for better or worse. The bad news is that it is statistically likely that these choices have culminated in you becoming a Starbucks Barista with $30,000 USD of student loan debt and a useless degree in Political Science. The good news is that your education does not end at graduation. Your education BEGINS at graduation. Graduation is liberation. It is not the start of something horrible. You have, quite literally, a world of opportunities in front of you. Get out of your recession-stricken developed western economy and pursue opportunities in dynamic emerging markets. Are you a recent grad who is feeling useless in the workforce? So was Ryan Beltran. Then he flew to China, raised $400,000 USD on Kickstarter, and now has his own profitable international e-commerce operation. Is your only marketable skill the ability to use the internet and speak English? Tim Nybo and Nick Ramil feel you. But they launched and are running a profitable wine label and import/export operation in Guangzhou. Are you slaving away as a cashier at a grocery store, regretting the decision to major in Anthropology instead of something more employable? So was Dan Sehl. Then he flew to China, taught English, interned at a boutique PR firm, and today works as an Associate at one of the top 3 global PR firms in the world at their Beijing office. Do you hate the sterile culture and long cold winters in North America or Europe? So did Ilya Brotzky. Then he flew to Brazil, became fluent in Portuguese, and got immersed in the tech and startup scene. Today he works in Sao Paulo for a prominent company in the burgeoning big data and analytics field. Did you get a degree in finance and get an offer on Wall Street or London, only to feel like the party ended before you showed up? So did Bob Reisenweber. So he showed up in Colombia and launched a restaurant chain and an international cosmetics e-commerce venture. The opportunities are endless and your chance is right here, right now, in front of your face. You will have to be the one to choose to seize it. To quote Sun Tzu’s “The Art of War” – “Opportunities multiply as they are seized.”
