[How to choose yarns that suit you?]
Below is a brief overview on the most common yarn fibers.
(A) Natural fibers - plant
Cotton yarn
-Strong, durable, soft, cool, breathable, light, has excellent water absorption properties with short drying times, machine-washable.
-non-elastic, rigid.
-Many cotton yarns are mixed with synthetic fibers, such as acrylic, to enhance their durability and add an extra layer of warmth to the material.
Bamboo yarn
-cool, soft, light, strong, antibacterial, breathable, gentle on sensitive or delicate skin.
-can swell in water and expand. Recommend to hand-wash anything made with bamboo yarn.
(B) Natural fibers - animal
Wool yarn
-produced from the fleece of sheep.
-warm yet breathable with thermo-regulating properties, durable, naturally fire-retardant, has natural elasticity allowing it to hold its shape well.
-It has moisture-wicking and moisture-absorbing properties that help to keep skin dry and warm.
-can be itchy, felts easily (its scaly fibers latch onto each other, tangle together) thus requiring hand-wash unless it is superwash (please see the photo from overtherainbowyarn.com).
Merino yarn
-comes from merino sheep.
-has all the amazing properties of wool, but much softer and does not itch like traditional wool.
-not as hard-wearing as traditional wool, can 'pill' (create little fuzz balls).
Alpaca yarn
-made from an alpaca’s fleece.
-soft, fluffy, silky, one of the smoothest animal fibers, lightweight, warmer than wool but remains cooler than wool when exposed to higher temperatures, hypoallergenic (especially good for sensitive skin that can't tolerate the 'scratchy' texture of wool, & great for those who have a lanolin allergy).
-pills easily, breaks easily, not very elastic, can expand with time.
Cashmere yarn
-comes from Cashmere goat.
-the softest and fluffiest yarn, extremely warm without being bulky, has a less shiny look than alpaca, naturally fire-resistant, absorbs moisture well, and does not produce static.
-rather expensive, can pill, not a strong fiber and so requires a lot of delicate care.
(C) Synthetic fibers
Acrylic yarn
-warm, soft, lightweight, hypoallergenic, machine washable, durable, much longer lasting than natural fibers, holds its shape and color well, the most affordable type of yarn.
Nylon & Polyamide Yarn
-highly resilient, strong, durable, light, mimics the soft and smooth feel of silk, machine-washable & tumble-dryable without going out of shape.
-When nylon or polyamides are added to natural fibers it improves strength, elasticity and durability of the yarn.
Polyester Yarn
-wrinkle & stain resistant, durable, soft, hydrophobic (repels water), machine-washable & dried quickly without loss of shape (great for high use baby knits), great for those who are allergic to regular wool.
-When used in a yarn blend, polyester adds durability and structural stability.
When blended with natural fibers, it helps reduce shrinking and add strength.
