As the founder, I never set out to start a business, own a company, let alone be one to carry the title, ‘entrepreneur’.
It all began with trying to answer a question. ‘Are business best practices in Asia accessible only to the abundantly resourced?’. The market landscape seemed to indicate ‘yes’. That didn’t sit right with me, and based on this lament, Astera Asia was founded in Hong Kong on January 1, 2015.
Our commitment was, and has always been, to offer corporate level expertise as guidance for small organisations (the little guy) to operate effectively. Sounds basic, and maybe even, ‘duh’; but in that context, it was rare, it still is. Because to us, it’s more than giving advice and getting paid.
Astera Asia was built to be a redemptive business. Seeing highly nuanced needs in an underserved and often overlooked sector, our work is an opportunity to journey with people, uplift their organizations, and serve the community; all the while being profitable. Not only is it rare, it’s very difficult. Once we got going, the vision attracted like-minded people who wanted to join, and many others who needed our help.
Perhaps this is how a redemptive business begins. A question that leads to a lament, that ignites a passion for change, that is casted as a vision, and lived out as a mission; together with those who want to see the same thing come to pass.
Along the way, we have had many pivots but we have never Pivoted away from our start. We are now based in Toronto, Canada, still serving clients around the world, and still answering the same founding question. It turns out, Asia or not, the needs of small organisations are often the same.
So today, there is much to celebrate. We ring in a new calendar year, and Astera Asia rings in a new decade.
The road to entrepreneurship is never straight but when done with a redemptive purpose, there’s meaning in the hardship; it becomes a soul business.
So may we not ignore the questions that come our way, nor the lament of our hearts. May we stay curious and be ready for new adventures, while holding true to our calling.
Happy New Year, and Happy 10th Birthday to Astera Asia,
- Hannah
