Zen story on being flexible.
An old man slipped on a wet rock near the edge of a river and fell in. As onlookers watched on in horror, he was swept towards a high waterfall. There was great joy when he emerged bruised, but otherwise unharmed downstream. "How did you manage to survive?", they asked him. "Instead of trying to make the water accommodate me, I accommodated myself to it", said the old man. "Instead of fighting it, I relaxed into the swirl and allowed it to shape me. I worked with the force of the water instead of against it. That is how I survived".

On a webinar today, I heard this interesting factoid: giant sequoia trees are not harmed by fire. In fact, their survival depends on these fires.
Giant sequoia trees are the largest and some of the oldest trees on Earth, with the oldest one dating back 3,500 years. So when Ramses II was building his giant statues in Egypt, this was a sapling.
Over the centuries, it appears that the sequoia has learned that fires actually help them survive and grow. So they have adapted. Their bark is fire resistant and while there is damage, they are able to withstand and grow from these fires. The older the tree, the more it is likely to survive. Isn't that incredible?
I have promised myself that every time I find myself focusing on the gloom and doom that surrounds us now, I'll shift focus to the sequoia - do what I can to strengthen myself, emotionally and physically, so that I can thrive. After all, it is in my hands, isn't it?

COVID19 has certainly made this a very interesting period in our lives. The number of changes that we have had to make has made VUCA a reality for all of us.
As leaders, we have to re-think our world view and our beliefs about what works and what doesn't. We have to make rapid changes to how we communicate and gain the commitment of our teams, our customers and our stakeholders. Aside from that, the bigger need of the day for a lot of us is to look within - to find new sources of energy and emotional resilience.
has a variety of tools that help leaders with all the above, while making it fun. Great for both 1:1 as well as a .

“Change is the only constant”, goes an old saying. Change is defined as “an act or process through which something becomes different”.
2020 certainly has been a poster for change. Since the start of this year, so much has happened that life as we know it has changed. This change has not been slow either. It has been fast and has made our world even more VUCA (Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous).
Studies show that when human beings go through rapid change, it impacts the emotions and the cycle that one goes through is called ‘emotional cycle of change’. Learning how to manage this is a key life skill.
In partnership with HKIB (Hong Kong Institute of Bankers), we will be running an online programme on 'Managing the Emotional Impact of Change'.
