🇩🇪💍 I wanted to get married in Germany… and Germany told me to slow down. 😲
I’ve been living in Germany for years, paying taxes and building my life here. But when it was time for our wedding, the paperwork got complicated because one of us is not from the EU. My husband is German; I’m from Honduras.
Here’s what I had to do (nobody told me this clearly):
→ Apostille my birth certificate + German translation
→ Get a “single status” certificate from Honduras, apostilled + translated
→ Certified copy of my passport
→ Proof I’m registered in Germany
→ If needed: apostilled divorce/death certificates
→ Sometimes: consulate interview
It took months. We didn’t want to wait anymore. 💔
So we decided to do something different.
We went to Miami 🌴
In Florida, getting married was surprisingly simple:
→ Valid passports from both of us
→ Marriage certificate issued in Florida (recognized everywhere)
→ Ceremony in days, not months
We chose the same day. Sun, ocean, city… and it worked. ☀️ We got married. 👩❤️👨
And if you don’t want to travel across the ocean:
🇩🇰 Denmark (especially Copenhagen) is like the wedding “shortcut” many expat couples use.
→ Paperwork can be arranged in 1–2 weeks
→ Marriage is recognized across the EU, including Germany
→ Berlin to Copenhagen is under 2 hours ✈️
After 14 years in Germany, I learned something: the system isn’t always built for everyone. But there’s always another way. 🤍
