Co Sleeping usually occurs when your baby is waking frequently or unsettled during the night. This may work well for a short time however, we need to consider the safety aspect of this practice.
Please consider the following;
- Put baby to sleep on their back with feet at bottom or touching cot, once they start to roll, 4-6 months they will find their own sleep position.
- Babies’ head must be uncovered- no beanies, heat escapes from their head and we don’t want to be overheating our babies.
- Avoid smoking, strong evidence suggests exposure to second hand smoke harms babies. Even though you are smoking away from baby.
- Use a cot that meets Australian Safety Standards, avoid using a cot or bassinet that is more than 10 years old.
- Share a room, at least for the next 6-12 months.
- Breastfeed your baby, breastfeeding reduces by more than half the risk of SUDI including SIDS and fatal sleeping accidents.
-Don’t use bumpers, pillows, loose bedding, toys,doonas,sheepskin or lambs wool where baby is sleeping.
- Remove dummy chains when sleeping as this is a safety/choking risk.
- Don’t overheat your baby with too many layers of clothing, don’t worry about baby’s hands and feet as they are always cool, that’s normal. Always feel baby’s back, tummy or back of neck, if clammy they’re too hot.
