Bilo je pravo zadovoljstvo sudionicima III. konferencije o očuvanju i interpretaciji pomorske baštine u Rovinju predstaviti rezultate i metode projekta našeg novog projekta usmjerenog na dokumentiranje drvenih barki. Projekt provodimo od 2023. u suradnji sa Kanata - Udruga za istraživanje i zaštitu maritimne baštine i Geodetski fakultet Zagreb ( i Hrvoje Tomić).

Ideja je bila da, kombinacijom znanstvenog pristupa, arheoloških metoda i modernih dokumentacijskih tehnika pokušamo razviti metodologiju dokumentiranja tradicionalnih drvenih brodova istočnog Jadrana. Mislim da smo u tome uspjeli, i da ovim pristupom barem jedan dio naše jako bogate, ali brzo nestajuće, pomorske baštine možemo spasiti od zaborava.

Great to be back working with the .hr crew on the Barbir Roman shipwreck.

What makes this ship so interesting is that its structure remained preserved well above the waterline, allowing us to study a number of elements that are very rare in the archeological record, such as decking, bilge pump, and even the steering system.

Few more sketches and measures underwater and we're ready to start its reconstruction process later this year, looking forward to it!

Recovering timbers of the Byzantine Tatinica shipwreck from -35 m.

Each timber was marked and its position on the seabed documented before recovery.

Although not in great shape, they will allow us lear more about the ship that transported this incredible cargo (see last post).

Some interesting pieces were documented and recovered as well.

They provide us with a unique insight into the world of 7th century carpenters and shipbuilders!

After being studied and documented in detail on land, the timbers were returned to the site.

One of the questions archaeologists often get jokingly asked is "Did you find any treasure?"

Well, yes. Yes we did. One of a kind in the whole world.

Forty golden objects (found so far), some of unprecedented craftsmanship, made up small part of cargo transported by a Byzantine sailing ship that met its demise at the entrance to Polače harbour on Mljet island, Croatia, around the end of 7th century.

Numerous other precious objects uncovered from the depth over the years bear witness to a high stakes voyage that might have bee linked to the highest echelons of the Byzantine society.

I'm proud and humbled to be a part of this project, carried out by the Department of Underwater Archaeology of the Croatian Conservation Institute, since the beginning. In recent years, NavArchos has been taking care of all field documentation and studying ship remains of this extraordinary archaeological site.

Looking forward to new surprises awaiting us under the sand in the future!

As part of our preventive archaeological excavation in Senj harbour, Croatia, we're making a number of probe trenches.

Such trenches are excavated in order to check for archaeological layers and materials in certain areas, often as prerequisite for upcoming construction work.

Podvodna arheologija u Senju! ⚓️

U tijeku je drugi tjedan zaštitnog podvodnog arheološkog istraživanja u senjskoj luci, koje se provodi kao preduvjet dogradnji i proširenja senjskih gatova i lukobrana. 🏰

Istraživanje provodi NavArchos pod vodstvom dr. sc. Antona Divića, a sudjeluju mlade snage hrvatske podvodne arheologije: Nera Janković, Mislav Popović, Andro Nekić, Martin Sokolić te povjesničar Tomislav Šušak. ✊️

Investitor istraživanja je Lučka uprava Senj.

✨️ Reconstruction time! ✨️

In ancient ship reconstruction, despite most of the process being digital, construction of a physical model can serve as a precise method for obtaining the shape of the studied vessel.

The pictured half-model, recently completed, makes up one step in the reconstruction project of Zaton 3, a Roman-era sewn ship researched by .

Based on the well-preserved and well-documented archaeological remains of the ship, this 1:10 half-model was made out of wood, wooden cardboard and 3D-printed elements. By following principles and methods similar to the original ship's construction, it serves to obtain a precise reconstruction of its lines.

Next step: modeling a complete digital ship reconstruction, with all elements included, on the basis of the obtained shape!
