As part of our preventive archaeological excavation in Senj harbour, Croatia, we're making a number of probe trenches.

Such trenches are excavated in order to check for archaeological layers and materials in certain areas, often as prerequisite for upcoming construction work.

Podvodna arheologija u Senju! ⚓️

U tijeku je drugi tjedan zaštitnog podvodnog arheološkog istraživanja u senjskoj luci, koje se provodi kao preduvjet dogradnji i proširenja senjskih gatova i lukobrana. 🏰

Istraživanje provodi NavArchos pod vodstvom dr. sc. Antona Divića, a sudjeluju mlade snage hrvatske podvodne arheologije: Nera Janković, Mislav Popović, Andro Nekić, Martin Sokolić te povjesničar Tomislav Šušak. ✊️

Investitor istraživanja je Lučka uprava Senj.

✨️ Reconstruction time! ✨️

In ancient ship reconstruction, despite most of the process being digital, construction of a physical model can serve as a precise method for obtaining the shape of the studied vessel.

The pictured half-model, recently completed, makes up one step in the reconstruction project of Zaton 3, a Roman-era sewn ship researched by .

Based on the well-preserved and well-documented archaeological remains of the ship, this 1:10 half-model was made out of wood, wooden cardboard and 3D-printed elements. By following principles and methods similar to the original ship's construction, it serves to obtain a precise reconstruction of its lines.

Next step: modeling a complete digital ship reconstruction, with all elements included, on the basis of the obtained shape!

Another traditional wooden boat from the eastern Adriatic documented! ⚓

Locally known as "Plazulja", this boat was used in shallow waters around the historical town of Nin and neighboring municipalities for fishing and sand dredging. Its flat bottom and low draft are well adapted for its environment, characterized by shallow lagoons and sandbanks. 🛶

It's the sixth wooden boat to be documented in the last three years as part of a project aimed at documenting the maritime heritage of the Zadar region, carried out by Kanata association in collaboration with NavArchos. 🌊

Photogrammetric model made from 500 photos taken with Nikon Z7, generated in Agisoft Metashape, heavily decimated to 1M faces for upload. It will serve as the basis for drawing the boat's lines and technical documentation. 📸

This particular example hails from Vrsi, its documentation ordered by the Vrsi Municipality.

Photogrammetric 3D model of “Plazulja”, a flat-bottomed traditional wooden boat from the Zadar region, Croatia. This low draft vessel was traditionally used in in the shallow waters and lagoons around the historical town of Nin and neighbouring municipalities (Vrsi, Zaton, Privlaka, Vir)...

Predavanje, u organizaciji udruge Fenoliga i , drži dr. sc. Anton Divić, pomorski arheolog specijaliziran za podvodnu arheologiju i proučavanje antičke plovidbe i brodogradnje.

Četvrtak 20. studeni u 19h, stara škola u Premanturi.

It has been a great pleasure to spend several days surrounded by 400 maritime archaeologists from all around the world, and to have the opportunity to present them the results of our latest research project in the Kupa river! 👌👌

The project is a very successful collaboration between NavArchos, .muzej.sisak and Centre Camille Jullien, with , and participating. Next year towards new discoveries!

Documenting the well-preserved remains of the Roman-era Barbir shipwreck in Sukošan, Croatia.

As part of the research project, directed by .hr, we carried out photogrammetric documentation of the shipwreck: taking numerous overlapping photos in order to create a 3D model of the site, its "digital copy".

Great photo by from . It was a pleasure to meet and work with the Polish colleagues, hope to repeat it soon. 😉
