A French startup built a drone that flies using only light — no motors or propellers

In a stunning engineering twist, a startup in Lyon has demonstrated a drone that levitates and maneuvers entirely using concentrated light. No propellers, no motors — just photonic thrust. Inspired by the physics of solar sails and quantum pressure, this drone hovers using high-powered lasers that push against reflective surfaces.

It works on a principle called “optical lift,” where ultra-thin metamaterials reflect incoming laser beams in a way that creates upward force. By changing the angle of these mirrors in real time, the drone can steer, rise, and even hover steadily indoors or in space.

The drone is silent, vibration-free, and weighs just 90 grams. In lab tests, it flew across a 10-meter hall using only external light sources — no onboard energy. In future versions, miniaturized lasers will be installed onboard for autonomous flight, powered by supercapacitors and solar arrays.

This opens doors for ultralight aerial sensors in environments where traditional drones can’t go — such as inside chemical tanks, or next to magnetic fields. Even in space, photonic drones could replace chemical thrusters for maneuvering satellites or deploying sensors.

The startup, Photonaire, is now working with CNES and ESA for near-zero gravity trials, aiming to create the first self-steering light-powered spacecraft within 5 years.
