Initiate Project

Initiate Project Supporting European R&I through stakeholder collaboratIon and institutional reform The approach will be demonstrated in Croatia, Portugal and North Macedonia.

INITIATE is a Horizon Europe project coordinated by University of Zagreb, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture that aims to empower higher education institutions to develop R&I through institution transformation. INITIATE, in its widening dimension, seeks to raise excellence in science and knowledge valorisation of Europe's universities through cooperation and knowledge circula

tion. Through stakeholder inclusion and co-design approach, INITIATE will design an approach for institution transformation that will reflect on the current needs and resources of the institution, external elements such as policy barriers, good practices from other initiatives and identification of possible collaboration areas with other institutions including local ecosystems. Additionally, the project aims to achieve several outcomes, including the successful institutional reform and upgrade of higher education institutions in the R&I dimension, empowerment to be actors of change, and the mainstreaming of a culture of excellence in science and value creation amongst higher education institutions, particularly in less research-intensive institutions and countries. To achieve these outcomes, the project will engage universities as well as local ecosystems. This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and
innovation programme under grant agreement No. 101136775

On June 3rd-5th, the INITIATE HORIZON EUROPE PROJECT partners held our second General Assembly in Skopje, North Macedonia! Hosted by Ss. Cyril and Methodius University, Skopje, Macedonia, it was a productive and interesting three days where we got to meet all the project partners again and experience beautiful Macedonian culture. 🇲🇰
On the first day of the meeting, the partners presented the progress on their respective work packages. The second day was centered around a panel discussion and groupwork on green transition and digital transformation, with a tour of the Ss. Cyril and Methodius University later in the day. On the third day the partners held the R&I Lab Bridging Policy and Innovation: Research and Funding Synergies, where we learned about funding opportunities and North Macedonia's Policy Landscape and R&I drivers.
Of course it was not all work no play; we also had some wonderful dinners and cocktails in true North Macedonian fashion 🍸

Dear INITIATE partners and colleagues!

It is an honor to inform you about the successfully held two-day international scientific and professional forum "Western Balkans in Energy Transition", which brought together representatives of the region's academic and business community, decision makers and financial institutions on May 13 and 14 at the Serbian Chamber of Commerce.
The just held meeting is the result of a successful and fruitful cooperation between the INITIATE teams of the Vinca Institute of Nuclear Sciences and the Public Enterprise Electric Utility of Bosnia and Herzegovina with the support of the Ministry of Science, Technological Development and Innovation and the Ministry of Mining and Energy of the Republic of Serbia, Elektroprivreda Serbije - EPS, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Serbia - PKS, Energy of the Balkans and the Society of Thermal Engineers of Serbia, which were partners and sponsors of the meeting with over 150 participants.
The Forum, divided into three panels (I - Energy Transition in the Energy Economy of the Region, II - Energy Production from Renewable Energy Sources, Energy Efficiency in Buildings, Hydrogen and III - Use of Nuclear Energy for Peace Purposes/Power Generation), with a round table and 12 presentations, gathered recognized experts as panelists and speakers, fostered constructive discussions and raised many questions that clearly demonstrated the importance of cooperation between research institutions, industry, national authorities and policy makers, thus directly contributing to INITIATE's mission.
