A quick story.

A mid‑size company went all‑in on cloud with minimal governance. Teams moved fast, innovation improved, but cloud costs doubled and security incidents followed.

Leadership paused.

They introduced a small cross‑functional cloud governance group: cost visibility, basic security policies, architecture guidelines. It is the FinOps! Then they continued.

Six months later:

• Delivery speed stayed high
• Cloud costs dropped
• Security incidents decreased

The lesson?

Cloud freedom works best with guardrails.

Go fast, but don’t skip governance.

Let’s stop calling it “cloud strategy.”

In reality, it’s just business strategy, with cloud as a core enabler.

Organisations don’t adopt cloud to “be in the cloud”.
They adopt it to launch faster, scale globally, improve resilience, or enable new digital services.

When cloud initiatives are disconnected from business goals, disappointment follows. When they’re aligned, cloud stops being a project and becomes part of how the business operates.

Start with the business outcome.
Then decide how cloud supports it.

Cloud strategy is business strategy.

For many CFOs, “cloud adoption” sounds like “soaring costs”. For engineers, cloud is the engine of innovation. FinOps builds a bridge between those two views.

Instead of “cloud costs = bad” vs “cloud = good”, FinOps reframes it to “cloud investment = business value”. By providing clear cost metrics and KPIs (like cost per product, per customer, etc.), FinOps gives finance clarity on what they’re paying for – and gives tech teams the freedom to innovate within agreed guardrails.

The result? Trust. CFOs feel in control (cloud spend is no longer a black box), and engineering teams spend wisely (cloud resources aren’t a blank cheque). When finance and tech align, cloud stops being a tug-of-war and becomes a true partnership driving the business forward.

Cloud strategy isn’t just about technology – it’s about people and process. That’s why many organisations are establishing a FinOps practice (often as part of a Cloud Centre of Excellence) to guide their cloud journey. This isn’t about bureaucracy – it’s about helping teams move faster and safer.

A strong FinOps team provides:
Cost guardrails (to keep projects within budget)
Shared best practices (so teams avoid reinventing the wheel)
Transparency & trust (so leadership sees the value behind the spend)

The result? Teams innovate on cloud with confidence, knowing someone has their back on cost and governance. No one wants endless billing surprises or a “wild west” cloud environment. Investing in people + process ensures your cloud adoption stays efficient and well-governed.

Quick question for cloud leaders 👇

What’s the hardest part of building a solid cloud strategy today?

💰 Controlling cloud costs
🔒 Security & compliance
🏛️ Modernising legacy systems
👩‍💻 Finding the right cloud skills
⚙️ Governance and ownership
…or something else?
Curious to hear what’s actually causing friction in real environments.

Almost everyone claims to be multi‑cloud today.

But here’s the uncomfortable truth: multi‑cloud isn’t a free lunch.

Running workloads across multiple cloud platforms increases complexity, integration, security consistency, visibility, and cost control all become harder. That’s why many organisations don’t see the benefits they expected.

The key is intentional multi‑cloud:
• Choose specific use cases per cloud
• Be clear about what should (and shouldn’t) connect
• Accept that “everything everywhere” rarely works

Multi‑cloud can be a strength, but only when it’s designed, not accidental.

Growth brings opportunity and complexity.
As Comtrade grew into a global organization, one question became critical:
Do we really know what skills we have, and what we’ll need next?
Assumptions weren’t enough anymore.
They needed a clear, objective view of Azure and Microsoft 365 capabilities across teams.
Together, we focused on visibility and trust.
Combining self‑assessment with expert validation, the goal wasn’t to label people, but to create a shared, realistic picture of current strengths and real gaps.
The outcome wasn’t just insight.
It was a direction.
With validated data, Comtrade gained confidence to plan upskilling, capacity, and future growth, based on facts, not guesswork.
⬇️ The carousel shows how clarity became a foundation for smarter decisions.

Cloud adoption has skyrocketed 📈 – but so have cloud bills. One study found ~30% of cloud spend is essentially wasted due to poor cost management. Enter FinOps – the practice that brings finance & engineering together to ensure every pound you spend on cloud creates real value.

Why is FinOps mission-critical now? Because cloud is often one of a company’s top 2 costs (right after payroll), and every CFO wants ROI, not surprises. FinOps helps create a culture of accountability, cost visibility, and continuous optimisation – without slowing cloud innovation.

Cloud success isn’t just about using the cloud – it’s about using it efficiently. FinOps is how you keep cloud adoption sustainable and your CFO happy.

Before you migrate to the cloud, make sure you can answer these three questions:

1️⃣ What’s the real business reason?
If you can’t clearly explain how this migration supports a business goal, pause. Perform the necessary assessments and then proceed.

2️⃣ Are your people and processes ready?
Technology alone won’t save you. Skills, operating models, and clear ownership matter just as much. Again, engage to understand if there are any gaps.

3️⃣ How will you measure success?
Define success upfront, cost, performance, reliability, and baseline your current state so you can prove improvement.

Most cloud problems don’t start in the cloud.
They start with an unclear strategy.

Security adoption often fails not because of missing tools, but because of missing clarity.

On 8 May at 11:00, ur Principal Technical Consultant, Igor Pavlekovic is hosting joined Nephos and ALSO Group Security Factory online event focused on accelerating Microsoft 365 Security adoption. From Business Premium to the new Security & Compliance Suites.

We’ll cover what matters most today: Zero Trust for SMBs with Entra ID, MFA, and Conditional Access, endpoint and threat protection with the Defender Suite, and data security and compliance using Microsoft Purview, from Information Protection and DLP to Insider Risk and Compliance.

The goal is to connect the dots across the Microsoft security stack and help you understand what to enable, why it matters, and how it fits together.
