“Do I need a website?” is a question I get all the time.
And there’s no general answer here 🤷🏻‍♀️
As with everything else around your business, it depends on what you’re doing - and of course, for who.

We all love a strong always working law, but if you google “do I need a website for my business” you get equal result for reasons why it’s a must and reasons why it’s bu****it.
And they all have valid points.
Who is right then? They can’t all be.

My theory is, whoever claims to have an always working solution, can’t be right 👩🏻‍⚖️

Let’s face it:
There’s services that can’t survive without a website but also others that don’t even need it really.

Imagine a webstore without a website 💣
And now your local grocery store without a website 👩🏻‍🌾

So here’s my answer to the “Do I need a website to run a successful business?” $1000 question:

Does reaching your customers include having a website?
- if yes, then yes
- if no, then no

You must know by now that I love a good Lego example.
I guess we all have enough experience on the topic. I mean, on building Lego. And if at the age of 5 we could master the art of creating a whole world out of colourful little blocks, we can do the same with our business as adults 💪🏼

Because **drumroll** it’s basically the same thing 🥁

Do you know the feeling when you open that box of Palace Cinema, spend the whole weekend following the step-by-step guide, get amazed by all the little details they came up with and then have a complete building by the end that fits the Creator Expert world?

Because that’s exactly what should happen when building your business.

〰️ Have a concept, know what you want to reach by the end **cinema building**
〰️ Find a market position **Creator Expert collection, corner spot**
〰️ List everything you need to make it whole **building style and size, ticket area, a classic limousine, reclining audience seats, a big screen etc**
〰️ Have a plan to make it happen **guide**
〰️ Commit and make magic happen **spend the weekend on the living room floor**

And what’s the other option?

When you take the Lego bucket and start building your hotel 🏰
There’s always someone passing by telling you to include that arch piece or the other person sitting on the sofa yet letting you know that all hotels need a swimming pool and start with that… and of course these are all valid ideas but at the end it’s just a big mess.
Which is huge fun at xmas but not when it’s about a business you want to present to the world 🤷🏻‍♀️

So what’s the conclusion?

Every single little piece needs to fit your main concept if you want to amaze your audience.
The design and your offers. Your online and offline presence and your tools. Your processes and even the little notes on the packaging ✨

Let’s make that hotel of yours a Cafe Corner.
Aka let’s build you a great business and a matching brand. And processes. And customer experience. Let’s design your dream business 🔥

What is branding about, really?
I like to look at it as science 👩🏻‍🔬👩🏻‍🎨

Branding is about picking the elements that match your main idea - on all different levels.

Growing up in a society gives us access to common beliefs and assumptions.
Expectations and habits.

Branding is about not confusing your audience.
It’s about having visuals and processes that match social expectations.
(Unless of course your main goal is to shock people 🤷🏻‍♀️)

Just picture a tiny coffee shop in an italian village selling espresso since the beginning of time. Would you be disappointed if they wouldn’t have a saffron matcha latte with almond milk?
Of course not, you never expected them to have it in the first place!

You’ll never disappoint, if people know exactly what to expect from you 💁🏻‍♀️

There’s so many talented graphic designers out there and I’m still team Done With You Branding.
Why?

Before diving in, let me get one thing straight:
I’m a huge fan of graphic designers and everyone deserves beautiful visuals made by them 👩🏻‍🎨

But! (and here comes the catch) only after they’ve figured out their brand strategy

✨Ehm, details please…✨
Yes, I’m getting at it.

Imagine you have a business idea and want to sell flowers.
You start working with a designer, tell them about your flower shop and when they ask about the style, you say: romantic.
You’re both happy and get to work.

Now romance for them might be red roses, white china doves, diamonds and champagne.
Romance for you might be wild flowers, Provence, picnic and cheap wine.

They already have this style in mind making you the greatest bouquet artist on Earth while you prefer herbs and wreath workshops.

Many times you don’t even think about saying these things out loud because the concept in your head has been clear for ages. Whenever you think of a flower shop, you remember that cute little store you saw in Italy in 1994.

But most people don’t know that. And memories fade anyway.

You need to be able to explain your vision.

〰️ First, put your concept together.
Find out what you want to offer, see if those services fit together and make sense to your audience.
I know you always wanted to sell flowers and still never gave up on your dream of making quesadillas, but for most people this product association is not obvious.

〰️ Be clear on who you want to work with, so that your message and visuals speak to them directly.

〰️ Decide on where you want to be present. Is it just about being the local florist who knows every person’s birthday?
Or you wanna lure people in from all around the region?

And I was just getting started!
Details, here we come 💪🏼

Once you have all these details set, and you don’t feel like mastering Wix, grab that pile of document you created and share it with a designer. They’ll know what to do from that point.

I’ve been thinking a lot about messages like ‘fake it til you make it’ or ‘learn it on the fly’, ’don’t let perfectionism stop you’ 🧐

And while they all carry deep wisdom on some level, I’ve seen people, as we say in Hungary, fall to the other side of the horse 🐎
I guess you get the meaning 💁🏻‍♀️

There’s no such thing as being 100% ready, but still, it’s your business. You and your client both deserve a great offer on your side.

So what’s a well designed business then? Is it about having it pretty?
That’s one element, yes.
People do trust more businesses with great looking and consistent visuals, but there’s more into business design.

It’s about thinking the whole concept through.

〰️ Come up with what you do, for who and how
〰️ Create offers your target audience needs
〰️ … and a client experience that matches this very concept
〰️ Visuals that communicate your message
〰️ And funnels that reach your dream clients

It’s about giving value and creating a business matching your vision.

Your visuals will tell your story in just a few seconds. Make it convincing and don’t let your audience disappoint.

‘Wtf, why would I do that?’ 😳
You do that when your visuals and processes don’t match your vision.
You can be the best mechanic in town, if by your look people expect you to be a piano teacher, they’ll be disappointed on your first meeting.

A well designed business is more appealing to your audience, but also, gives you the confidence and pleasure to step out and tell everyone about the great business you have.
You deserve to be proud 💪🏼

Also, that’s the easiest way to attract the right people 💁🏻‍♀️🍾

Not long ago, I wrote a post about how to know if it’s time to rebrand.
Now here’s the other side of the story. How often do you need to rebrand?

How often do you find yourself tweaking your brand a little?
How often do you feel like you need (a little) change because your brand doesn’t represent you perfectly anymore?
Or it’s out of style. Or your audience resonates with something else now. You’re just not proud anymore 🤷🏻‍♀️

💡 So here’s a catch:
Going with designs of the latest trends might help you shine a bit brighter than others. It’s a sparkler - in every sense. Looks magnetic, and doesn’t last very long 💥
As the trend moves on, your designs will look outdated too. In order to keep the momentum, you’ll find yourself rebranding quite soon.

💫 So how is a strategic brand different?

To build a brand style that feels like the perfect fit, tells your audience what your business is about and stays with you long term, you need to set your brand foundations first.

✨Define what you do, for who and how.
✨ Define what you want others to think about you.
✨ Your target audience and traits you value the most.

And build your brand based on that. 👷🏽‍♀️Pick the visuals that represent that dream business of yours. Create a service that backs your story up.

That way your brand will be like a perfect wing man. Will tell your dream clients about all the cool things you could do for them.
It’s not just trendy. It’s convincing 💪🏼

It’s also the little black dress that never goes out of style.

‘Will I never rebrand again then?’
You might. Mostly if your vision changes. Or your target audience.
But that’s your choice, isn’t it?
Your style will last a lot longer on the market.

In just a matter of seconds (or even less… millisenconds!) we evaluate every single situation we meet in life.
In order to achieve that, our brain uses all available information and excludes the ones that are not there. Our conscious mind only receives the informations our subconscious labeled as worthy of the heavy soldiers.

And as we talk about milliseconds here, our subconscious doesn’t work with written content. The story it creates is based on colours, tones, shapes, sizes, or even smells when not online 🌬

See why it is so important to create visuals that match your vision?
Most people will judge you and your business based on visual elements.

Many colours, full of hand-drawn animals? This is for kids
Pine, snow, orange and mulled wine? Some Xmas content
Outdoors, sh*ttons of flowers and chairs with ribbons? Wedding

I think you get my point 💁🏻‍♀️

When creating our brand, we like jumping straight to visuals.
But design is a communication tool. First, you need to find out what you want to say. 👩🏻‍🎨

Your business foundation, your message will set the direction of your brand.
Decide on your vision and then find the matching brand elements. 🔎

Does that mean you might not like your brand at the end?
No. It’s your brand. It reflects you and your business. You need to be proud of it.

There’s not just one right solution. Find the elements that you love and also reflect your business values.
Green is not the only way to say nature. You don’t have to face your mortal enemy, the spinach, every single day. 🦠

Sometimes we have the best ideas and yet, for some reason, they don’t work 🤷🏻‍♀️
Don’t you worry, tiny things make a huge difference! You might just need to shake things a little 💃🏻

Branding is all about letting people know what we do and attracting the right customers.
It needs a huge dose of looking at your business with an outside pair of eyes.
And there’s so many tiny details to pay attention to!

As we see in the example above:
〰️ they see a problem well - we’re not getting noticed
〰️ came up with a good idea - let’s show people we’re here
〰️ picked a great tool - flags
〰️ and yet, at the very end, after all those right choices, they picked the wrong design 😫

And it’s normal, we all do that. It’s hard to look at our business from the outside.
That’s exactly why we, branding consultants, exist. You focus on providing the best service, I deal with the visual communication 💪🏼🔥

They exist to tell the story of your business.
How do you think they could do that if you don’t have your foundations straight? You guessed right, that would be a hard job.

So if you want to build a solid brand, do it step-by-step, stone-by-stone, zoom-by-zoom.

1️⃣ FOUNDATION
get clear on what you do, for who, and how - you'll build your whole business & brand on this one

2️⃣ PERCEPTION
decide what you want people to think and feel about your brand - you'll pick your style and visuals matching that feeling

3️⃣ POSITIONING
create offers that serve your dream customers - both in content and pricing

4️⃣ VISUALS
pick visuals that match your business, your values and your market position - they will be telling your story for you - it better be yours

5️⃣ CUSTOMER JOURNEY
design the steps you want your clients to take - where do they meet you? then what happens? where do they go? how do they reach out?

6️⃣ WEBSITE THAT CONVERTS
define the goal of your site and make it happen - make it easy for visitors to navigate your site and reach the goal you defined

✨ Now, before you know it, you’ll build yourself a solid system:

How do I help you with your brand and business?

Think of me as your business GPS 📍

You kind of know where you wanna get, right?
✨ running an online business as a VA
✨ selling your handmade products
✨ becoming a boss queen

In order to reach that goal you need to be a bit more specific.
Just like on the map:

〰️ set the exact destination: coordinates, address, name of the pub
〰️ choose how to get there: by car, public transport, walking
〰️ pick one out of the options given to you: you might prefer the longer scenic route
〰️ and then: “show me how to get there”

Same applies to your business:

⚡️ set destination: what your business is about - what you do, for who and how
⚡️ transport: your resources and experience
⚡️ route options: positioning, services and offers
⚡️ and then, we’ll set you the road to get there

Can’t reach that destination until we know where we’re headed and what we deal with.
So, no. You can’t skip research 😂
But don’t worry, getting clear on your business foundations is always a huge relief.
