August 20 is one of Hungary’s most important national holidays, celebrating the foundation of the Hungarian state and the legacy of St. Stephen, Hungary’s first king. 👑🇭🇺

St. Stephen united the country, established a stable European kingdom, and laid the foundations of Hungary’s Christian and cultural identity. His legacy continues to shape Hungarian history and traditions more than 1,000 years later. ✨

The day is also known as the Day of the New Bread. 🌾🥖 Traditionally, the first bread made from freshly harvested wheat was blessed and shared, symbolizing life, renewal, gratitude and community.

✔️ His preserved right hand, the Holy Right (Szent Jobb), is one of Hungary’s most revered national relics.

🎆 In Budapest, the evening will culminate in a spectacular 10-minute fireworks show over the Danube. Afterward, the celebration continues with free outdoor concerts until dawn at three locations in Budapest. 🎵🌙

🚆 And if you’re outside Budapest, getting to the celebrations is easier too, with public transport services arranged to help people travel to and from the festivities.

🩺 Today is Semmelweis Day: Hungary's national Day of Healthcare.

Born in Budapest in 1818, Ignaz Semmelweis discovered something that changed medicine forever: that washing hands before treating patients could save lives. 💧
At the time, nobody believed him. Doctors were offended. The medical world pushed back.
But he was right. And eventually, the world caught up. 🌍
Every year on July 1st, Hungary honours his legacy by dedicating this day to healthcare workers across the country. A moment to recognise the people who show up every day to keep others healthy. 🤍

🇭🇺 Hungary has given the world more than many people realize. Semmelweis is just one example of the incredible thinkers, inventors, and scientists who shaped history from this small country in the heart of Europe.
