Since a lot of people organize their life around getting children to school and then getting them home, this also brings a change in all kinds of schedules around Hungary, including rush hours and public transport timetables. Additionally, you can expect another change in two weeks' time, when universities start too.

If you are wondering whether you should apply for Hungarian citizenship by descent, the first question to ask is this: Who is your ancestor based on who you can submit an application? This will be followed by: Can you prove your connection to them?

Before you rush to find the contact information of remote Hungarian village archives or look for a professional genealogist, there are several things you can do:

1. Organize what you already know
2. Review old family documents
3. Brace for name variations
4. Map one generation at a time
5. Treat online genealogy resources as a starting point, not as a result

Once you have collected as much information as you can on your own, you will have an easier time figuring out how to proceed.

Helpers offers assistance with every aspect of the Hungarian citizenship procedure, which includes support with family tree research. Read more about the above best practices in our latest article, and get started on your citizenship journey now.

September and the start of the new school year is just around the corner, when university students descend upon the rental real estate market. To avoid surprises when making a deal, now seems to be a good time to review what should go in the rental agreement. This is actually essential for both your Hungarian residency and your legal protection as a tenant.

From listing the exact property details and payment terms to deposits, termination rules, and attestation, a well-drafted contract can prevent misunderstandings later.

Our latest article explains what a Hungarian rental agreement should include and what to review carefully before signing.

Can you withdraw cash from your Hungarian company? Here's what business owners need to know. 🏦

Your company is a separate legal entity – and its funds are not yours to use freely. Every withdrawal must be justified and properly documented.

There are four legal ways to receive money from your business:

✅ Salary
✅ Dividends
✅ Expense reimbursements
✅ Shareholder loan

Undocumented cash withdrawals can be classified as personal income by the Hungarian Tax Authority – resulting in income tax, social security contributions, and late payment fees, potentially years after the fact.

Accounting rules in Hungary are strict. Make sure your finances are in order.

Today is August 20, or Foundation Day in Hungary. Starting today, you can try this year's Cake of Hungary in various confectioneries and cafés all around Hungary. It is called Bíborfehér, and it is a much like a cheesecake with various berries.

If you are on a diet, you might prefer the Sugarfree Cake of the year called Szilvafácska, which tastes as if plum dumplings (a traditional Hungarian dessert) were made into a creamy cake.

Happy holidays!

You can find this year's cake, called "Bíborfehér" in most confectionaries and cafés around Hungary.

August 20 also means a long weekend. The Helpers office will be closed on Thursday and Friday. But don't worry! We will be back at our desks on Monday.

Important update on our latest article concerning Hungarian Revolut bank accounts:

Hungarian residents who are third-country nationals have been reporting that their Revolut accounts are not being migrated, and when they requested the migration, they were rejected due to the lack of a Hungarian address card (which is available only to citizens and permanent residents). At this point, no further information is available from Revolut.

Are you planning to buy property at the edge of a town? Then watch out! There is a property category in Hungary called "zártkert", meaning "enclosed garden", which can cause a lot of headache.

Zártkert is technically agricultural land, even if the property is located in a seemingly urban area with other houses around. As such, several restrictions apply to it.
